Cadillac released a sneak peek of its latest concept, an all-electric V Series luxury performance vehicle called “Opulent Velocity.”
It's just a concept, so there are no details on production, pricing, or specifications yet. We can see the front end with a downward-sloping hood and an illuminated Cadillac badge that appears to surround the corner.
And the most notable thing about the short video posted by Cadillac is the sound: it's loud! Much louder than typically quiet EVs, suggesting Cadillac may be pulling some auditory trick for its electric V Series. (They are not alone! See Dodge's “Fratzonic Escape.”)
“The Opulent Velocity concept vehicle celebrates the past, present and future of the Cadillac V-Series brand,” Cadillac spokeswoman Paige Tatulli said in an email.
The timing of the teaser is meant to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the V Series' first launch at Sebring International Raceway in March 2004. That year, we saw the introduction of the 2004 Cadillac CTS-V, signaling the automaker's intention to compete with other high-performance luxury sub-brands such as BMW M and Mercedes AMG.
Thanks to their fast, fluid acceleration and aerodynamic shapes, electric vehicles fit perfectly into the high-performance segment. In fact, BMW, Mercedes and Audi all have high-performance electric vehicles for sale, or at least have outlined plans to sell them. Cadillac would be the last if it decided to go with a plug-in V Series.
Cadillac raced three V-Series.R hybrid race cars in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and FIA World Endurance Championship races last year. The company also started a year-long celebration of the V Series to celebrate its 20th anniversary.
