When it comes to news we love at TechCrunch, IPOs rank pretty high. Another big news that appears less frequently than we would like is that a startup buys another startup. These deals are often very interesting, as they bring a lot of talent or technology to an already growing company, potentially accelerating it.
So it was with joy that the Equity Podcast The team investigated Automattic's purchase of Beeper for $125 million. Recall that WordPress' parent company bought Texts.com last year for $50 million. Elsewhere in the trading world, Proton bought Standard Notes and we recently discussed the purchase of Wonderschool-Early Day. More, please!
In the Deals of the Week column, Mary Ann chose Payjoy's massive new run rate, while Alex wanted to talk about the Proxima Fusion round that could help bring the next energy revolution a little closer to reality.
To close, we analyze the latest from Anna Heim on the evaporation of the number of startups participating in Latin America from Y Combinator, what we propose could have something to do with the fact that fintechs have lost favor with investors, and that fintechs are the category of startups with which we most associate. Founding activity in Latin America.
It's not that fintech is dead, far from it. But we're certainly an ocean or two away from the heady days we saw in 2021. Equity returns Monday morning to start the week! See you then!
