If you're wondering when brands will finally stop trying to cash in on the Barbie craze, the answer is, in some ways, not yet. H.M.D. (or Human Mobile Devices), which has been making Nokia phones for the past few years, announced at MWC that it has partnered with Mattel to launch an official Barbie Flip Phone this summer. It will be pink, obviously, with a touch of “glitter”.
Aesthetically, it looks a lot like the original hot pink Motorola Razr from back in the day. But while that phone was eventually rebooted as a smartphone for the modern foldable era, the Barbie phone keeps things pretty basic. It will be a feature phone, not a smartphone, and HMD will market it as an accessory geared toward “style, nostalgia, and a much-needed digital detox.” HMD hasn't revealed much more about it yet, like pricing or actual photos, but the company says it plans to unveil the Barbie Flip Phone at MWC, so we'll probably see more as the week progresses.
Most people may not be ready to completely ditch their smartphones just yet, but if you're looking for a burner, this is probably one of the nicest ones you could get.
