It's going to get pretty fun in Faerûn with the arrival of official mod support. Baldur's Gate 3. Larian Studios announced that official mod support will be rolled out in phases, starting today with a closed alpha, before a closed beta test in July, culminating in the official release of Patch 7 in September. According to Larian, the staggered testing phases will give the community enough time to test the new modding tools before they become available on PC and consoles.
If you have experience with official mod support in games like Skyrim either Fall, Larian's approach will seem similar. On PC, mods will be tested to ensure TOS compatibility and overall stability before approval. Those mods will then undergo additional approvals before hitting the console. While PC players will have access to the full set of modding tools, and mods can still be created, downloaded, and played without using the official mod browser, console players will only be able to search for and install officially approved mods. You can consult the complete Baldur's Gate 3 mods faq page here, and players interested in testing mod support during the closed beta in July will have the opportunity to sign up at a later date. As Larian has stated, he has no plans to create DLC or a Baldur's Gate 3 sequel, so offering official mod support is the studio's way of letting the community take the reins of Baldur's Gate 3 development to ensure the game remains up to date for years to come.
Patch 7 is not limited to introducing mod support tools. It will also contain major content updates to the game, including improved evil endings, tons of small narrative additions (Wyll's romances, your time is coming), and bug fixes. Beyond the release of Patch 7 in September, Larian also said that he plans adding crossplay and photo mode.
