Now that Google’s Pixel 9 event is behind us, it’s time to look ahead to the next big industry event. Apple’s iPhone 16 event, arguably the biggest date on the tech world’s fall calendar, is taking place on September 9 at 1:00 p.m. ET.
Apple has used the slogan “It's Glowtime” in an invitation it has sent to the media. As usual, the event will take place at the Steve Jobs Theater at the company's headquarters, Apple Park, in Cupertino, California.
As always, rumors about the iPhone 16 line have been circulating in the run-up to the event. However, it's likely to be a more low-key year in terms of hardware changes, with Apple perhaps putting more emphasis on software and Apple's ai features.
Apple will almost certainly update the chipset that the iPhone uses, in large part because it will want to ensure that all of its current smartphones support Apple Intelligence. For now, only the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max have enough power to do so. Plus, a new chipset is a minimal upgrade.

There may be a more significant change on the camera front, as Apple is expected to… add a capture button which includes zoom gesture controls. The idea is to make it easier to take photos and record videos in landscape mode. It’s not clear whether the button will be available across the range or just on the Pro models. However, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus are expected to lose the mute switch in favor of the action button that debuted on the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.
iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, watchOS 11, and other major updates to Apple’s operating system will almost certainly be available very soon after the event. The much-hyped Apple Intelligence features, however, won’t be available right away. Since they’re in the iOS 18.1 beta, most people will have to wait for the public release of that version (and equivalent versions of the operating system on other supported devices) to try out Apple Intelligence. Apple is expected to release iOS 18.1 in October.
Meanwhile, Apple typically introduces new Apple Watch models at its iPhone events. The Apple Watch Series 10 (or Series x, perhaps) is expected The new chip will make the device more powerful or more energy efficient. The display could be much larger, and there are reports suggesting that Apple is planning to ditch the 41mm variant and introduce a 49mm one. Rumors also suggest that Apple is redesigning the band system with new connectors. This could, unfortunately, prevent you from using your current bands on the Series x.
Rumors also suggest that we'll be getting some updated AirPods at the event. We might see entry-level and mid-level versions of the AirPods 4 in a couple of weeks, with only the latter supporting wireless charging for the case.
