Apple's beta testing service, Testflight, just received a pretty substantial update, according to a report by TechCrunch. Updating software gives developers much more control over who can join a beta and how new features are shared. It also allows beta testers to learn more about an app before diving in.
Developers will be able to establish all kinds of criteria about who can or cannot access the beta. This should help developers limit test groups to specific audiences, such as those using a particular device or operating system version. Testflight offers maximum of 10,000 invitations by default, so this should help reserve spots for your intended audience. Developers can now also reduce this maximum number to whatever they want.
The update allows for greater control over beta invites as they can highlight new features and content. Apple says beta versions of apps that have already been approved for release can now include screenshots and the app's category along with the invitation.
App creators will also be able to see metrics about the success of a beta invitation, including information about how many people saw the invitation, who opted in, and why they declined.
As for users, beta invitations can include a comments field. This is for people to let the developer know why they decided not to download an app.
