Starting in December, the Comixology app will no longer work; instead, you’ll have to read your comics in Amazon’s Kindle app. Amazon announced that the apps will merge on December 4, meaning that from then on, “you can continue to access your Comixology comics, graphic novels, and manga titles in the Kindle app.” the company says in a support document.
You’ll need to download any Comixology books you were reading in the Kindle app, but Amazon says any progress on a book you read in Comixology will automatically sync to the Kindle. You can also continue buying comics at Amazon’s Comixology section in their store. But after December 4, you will no longer be able to read comics in the Comixology app.
In an email, Amazon outlined some improvements to the Kindle app aimed at making it better suited to comics. There’s a “Comics & Magna” filter for your library to more easily see all the comics and manga you own. The application will group numbers, volumes and omnibuses of the same series. You can also hide and show specific books, and any books you have set as hidden in the Comixology app will be hidden on Kindle. Comixology also shared a video on X (formerly Twitter) on how you can use the Kindle app for comics.
Amazon announced it was acquiring Comixology in 2014 and, for a long time, pretty much left the service alone. But last year, it redesigned the Comixology app and began a messy merger of Comixology and Kindle that my colleague Alex Cranz described as “a hell I’d like to escape.” Although Amazon has promised to fix Comixology, unfortunately, very soon, the Comixology app will not work at all.
