At the COMPUTEX 2023 trade show, tech giant Nvidia revealed a demo of its NVIDIA Avatar Cloud Engine (ACE) for gaming, demonstrating the power of AI in games on a giant screen. The demo featured a CGI of a cyberpunk ramen cafe, complete with a waiter NPC engaging the player in conversation.
Nvidia has introduced the Omniverse Avatar Cloud Engine for Games, an artificial intelligence (AI) platform for gaming that combines several previously separate AI-based features and functionality. nvidia appears to be making one of the first substantial attempts in this field, which has long been heralded as a potentially fruitful application of modern AI.
Nvidia built the engine in collaboration with the Melbourne firm Convai. He used NVIDIA’s NeMo, Riva, and Omniverse Audio2Face services to modify NPC stories and characters, enable live voice conversations with NPCs, and generate facial animations from audio input. Although ray tracing is crucial for rendering, Nvidia is set to push things forward with additional AI integrations. The technology known as Omniverse Avatar Cloud Engine (ACE) for games allows NPC without scripts to talk to the user in-game using their real voices.
Modders have shown that Nvidia’s AI-based technology is incredibly adaptable, allowing it to be implemented in games that don’t natively support it. A modder implementing Nvidia DLSS in Fallout 4 is a good example of this, as are native enhancement solutions from AMD and Intel. ACE for Games can have the same degree of adaptability; however, this remains to be seen.
The ramifications of AI’s entry into the games industry have probably gotten the most attention so far, but the people who should be most concerned by now are writers. Despite the possible protests and objections that may arise, it is likely that artificial intelligence will write NPC speech and quest text in games soon. This is already happening and will appear in games this year. But last night’s announcement from Nvidia shows that the repercussions could be much more far-reaching than previously thought, eventually replacing voice artists, animators, lighting crews, and the whole racket.
It is the beginning of the possibility of more complex and interesting game characters. Also, AI can make it easy to create new worlds and characters in record time. This is fantastic news for game developers! The potential of this technology is mind-boggling. Previously requiring hundreds of players, games may soon be feasible for teams of 10 or even individuals to complete. Players can quickly engage in true role-playing games and have meaningful conversations with virtual counterparts.
