With recent developments in the field of artificial intelligence, large language models, including GPT and LLaMa, continually show remarkable performance on a wide spectrum of natural language tasks. These models have proven to be effective in various areas and have greatly advanced the field of natural language processing. Language models are capable of receiving instructions from humans and performing different jobs. However, there is a drawback and that is that these models have difficulties with tasks that involve knowledge of tables. This is because their main formation is one-dimensional texts in natural language, while tables are two-dimensional structures, which explains this restriction.
To address this problem, a team of researchers has proposed the concept of table wrapping, an innovative way to alleviate this problem. This method involves additional training or optimization of pre-existing language models, such as GPT-3.5 and ChatGPT, using a wide range of table-related tasks derived from real tables. Improving the ability of these language models to understand and manipulate tables is the main goal of table tuning.
Table-GPT models, which have been generated by table fitting, exhibit improved table understanding capabilities. These models have consistently outperformed the standard GPT-3.5 and ChatGPT on a wide range of table-based tasks. This means they can interpret and manipulate tabular data more accurately. Table-GPT models retain a high degree of generalization even if they are specialized for table work. They are able to adapt to new activities involving tables because they can react effectively to a variety of human instructions. This flexibility is comparable to ChatGPT’s ability to handle a variety of natural language work and the original GPT-3.5.
The main contributions have been summarized as follows.
- Table-tuning paradigm: The table-tuning paradigm has been introduced, which involves training language models once again with the express purpose of improving their efficiency on tasks involving tables. It employs a variety of table-based works that are synthesized from real tables using a synthesis-then-augmentation methodology.
- Data Augmentation Approaches: Data augmentation approaches have been developed at task level, table level, instruction level and completion level at different levels. These methods are essential to maintain the generalization of Table-GPT and avoid overfitting. By adding value to the training set, they strengthen the model.
- Performance on Table Tasks: Out of the box, Table-GPT exhibits exceptional proficiency on table-based tasks in both zero-shot and low-shot scenarios. This indicates that the model can perform these tasks quite well, even with little specialized training or examples.
- The adaptability of Table-GPT makes it suitable for use as a table base model. When it comes to later single-task optimizations, such as task-specific fine-tuning and rapid engineering, it may be a better place to start than basic GPT. This shows how useful it is for a variety of purposes outside of table work.
In summary, the suggested table-tuning paradigm provides a way to overcome the difficulty of teaching language models how to use tables. It improves their understanding of two-dimensional data structures and gives them the tools they need to succeed in a wide range of table-related jobs, both known and unknown.
