Well-known AI company Hugging Face has launched HuggingChat, an open source competitor to the popular AI-powered OpenAI chatbot ChatGPT. HuggingChat is now available to the public through the company’s website and can connect with third-party applications and services through the Hugging Face application programming interface.
HuggingChat, like ChatGPT, is versatile and can do things like write code, write emails, and write rap lyrics. Open Assistant, a project run by the German nonprofit organization LAION, created the AI model that powers HuggingChat. To build the assistant of the future, Open Assistant aims to mimic the features of ChatGPT while also including APIs, doing on-the-fly research, and more.
HuggingChat, like ChatGPT, has a web interface for testing and an API for integrating with other applications and services. You can perform tasks like coding, sending emails, and producing rap lyrics. Open Assistant aims to make AI assistants available to the general public. Therefore, it must be lightweight and efficient enough to run on common consumer devices. Like other text generation models, HuggingChat has its limits, and the developers admit that it can go off course very quickly if the wrong queries are made.
With funding in the tens of millions, Hugging Face is considered one of the most promising artificial intelligence (AI) companies. The launch of HuggingChat marks a huge step forward for the company and the development and potential of AI-powered chatbots in many fields.
The potential for mainstream acceptance of HuggingChat is tremendous, although it is still in its infancy. It will be interesting to see how Hugging Face’s novel approach to AI technology improves over time, and it’s encouraging to see the company’s dedication to open source development and accessibility. The financial viability of HuggingChat is currently unknown as licensing difficulties are resolved. HuggingChat was developed using a version of Meta’s LLaMA that is not licensed commercially.
Some have speculated (including VentureBeat) that OpenAI has become a platform similar to Apple’s App Store due to its announcement of ChatGPT plugins; Similarly, some are already talking about the potential for Hugging Face to become the equivalent of Android’s app store.
According to the Open Assistant GitHub website, the ultimate goal of the project is to create a “future assistant” that can do more than compose emails and cover letters; You’ll be able to perform useful tasks, integrate with external APIs, conduct research on the fly, and more. To make this possible in an open and accessible way, it is necessary not only to create a fantastic assistant, but also to reduce it to the point where it can run efficiently on common consumer hardware. However, there is still a way to go. HuggingChat, like any text generation model, is subject to rapid deviation from the intended path, as Hugging Face acknowledges in the fine print.
