Now, data science is a BIG field and the job itself is not clearly defined yet. Data scientists at different companies often have slightly different roles, so ultimately the math needed for each position will vary.
However, there are some fundamental topics that I think all data scientists should know and will probably cover most of the requirements in job descriptions and interview questions you may be asked.
It's important to mention that these are more for the entry-level and junior level, not for those who want to be machine learning researchers at OpenAI, Microsoft, or Tesla. That's a different topic, one that I don't have experience talking about, and it revolves around going the research route rather than the industry route.
In general, there are three categories in mathematics that you should study:
- Probability and statistics
- Calculation
- Linear algebra
