After a several-hour outage in the early hours of the morning, OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot crashed again, but this time it wasn't the only ai provider affected. On Tuesday morning, both Claude and Anthropic's Perplexity began seeing issues as well, but they were resolved more quickly.
Google's Gemini appears to be working currently, although it may also have gone offline briefly, according to x.com/HadasFrank/status/1798030952414978387″>Some user reports.
It's unusual for three major ai vendors to go down at the same time, which could indicate a broader infrastructure problem or an Internet-scale problem, such as those affecting multiple social media sites simultaneously, for example. It's also possible that Claude and Perplexity's problems were not due to bugs or other issues, but rather because they received too much traffic in a short period of time due to the ChatGPT outage.
On the ChatGPT homepage, the ability to send messages to the ai chatbot did not work during its outage. The issue started around 7:33 a.m. PT and was resolved around 10:17 a.m. PT, another several-hour outage.
At one point during the outage, ChatGPT's website updated to indicate that the service was at capacity (in pirate speak, no less) and offered to notify users when it was back online.
Claude's website displayed an error with a message saying: “An error occurred while rendering server components. The specific message is omitted in production builds to prevent sensitive details from being leaked. A summary property is included in this error instance that can provide additional details about the nature of the error.”
Then the site recommends “try again.”
Claude started working again shortly after 12:10 pm Eastern Time.
Perplexity's site also displayed the overcapacity message that would appear when the service received too many requests. It said “We'll be right back” and “We're getting a lot of questions right now and we've reached capacity.” Please come back soon.”
The site resumed operation around the time Claude's outage was resolved, but has been going up and down intermittently since then.
Of note, ChatGPT had recently resolved a prolonged outage that affected its service overnight. The chatbot had been down for users around the world during the early morning hours (Pacific time), prompting complaints on x and Threads. The company's status page indicated that a bug was being fixed and the issue was being monitored around 12:21 a.m. PT.
At 7:33 a.m. PT, the status page has been updated to say that ChatGPT is once again unavailable for some users and that OpenAI is “currently investigating this issue.” The chatbot was still down at 12:28 p.m. ET, according to its status page, which has described it as a “major blackout.” The problems were resolved several hours later.

ai providers did not immediately respond to requests for comment or more information about the outages, but we will update as more information becomes available.

ai disruptions aren't the only online disruptions happening today. Forbes also reports on a zero-day spam attack taking place on TikTok, currently affecting select brand and celebrity accounts, including Paris Hilton and CNN.
