Where we are with the Sam Altman saga.
It’s been a whirlwind couple of days. If you’re playing catch-up, here’s a summary of the current crisis at OpenAI:
• The company published a blog post On Friday afternoon he announced that he had fired Altman as CEO and that Chairman Greg Brockman would resign. The board said Altman had not communicated candidly with them.
• CTO Mira Murati was named interim CEO.
• Brockman later said “I leave.”
• Altman and Brockman published a joint declaration saying they were “shocked and saddened” by the board’s actions.
• Three senior researchers reportedly resigned in protest: Jakob Pachocki, Aleksander Madry and Szymon Sidor.
• Sources said Ilya Sutskever, the chief scientist at Open ai, was instrumental in Altman’s dismissal.
• Yesterday, sources said The edge that OpenAI was trying to get Altman back as CEO.
• Altman has conditions, including that the board members who fired him resign. The board has been dithering and negotiations passed the key deadline of 5 p.m. Pacific Time on Saturday.
• The edge I heard there would be mass resignations if a deal wasn’t reached by 5 pm Pacific time. No agreement was reached and talks continue today.
• OpenAI is “optimistic” that it can bring Altman back. A memo sent to staff last night said an update was expected this morning.
