ROMhacking.net, a loyal follower of the classic online gaming world, turned off its lights on Saturday. Nightcrawler, who created and runs ROMhacking, announced that the sitewhich hosted community-made mods for classic games, has stopped accepting submissions and will only publish news in the future.
Nightcrawler said the site's collection can be found on Internet Archive (where, incredibly, 20 years of hacks and other files are crammed into a single 11.7GB zip file). He added that the forum will remain active and downloadables will still be available for now; otherwise, the site is in read-only mode.
Nightcrawler blamed the site's shutdown on “24/7 usage, endless queues, and a never-ending inbox” as well as “legal burdens.” He also accused members of a group that had offered to take over the site's administration of revealing his personal information and of plotting to remove him from the site.
