To understand the present, it is necessary to revisit the past. Nearly 50 years ago, the Vietnam War was a controversial, decades-long conflict that many believed was simply unwinnable. The United States government recruited soldiers through the use of the draft, forcing many young Americans, particularly those representing lower socioeconomic backgrounds, to fight a war in which they did not believe.
The veterans who returned home were not only scarred by battle wounds and mental trauma; They were also often treated with resentment and hostility, and portrayed negatively in pop culture through films such as The deer hunter (1978) and Coming back home (1978).

It now attracts more than 5 million visitors annually and has become one of the most visited sites in Washington, DC.
Through increased access to health resources and counseling for veterans, particularly those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, awareness was raised about the health consequences of Agent Orange, which was used widely throughout the conflict, and relief efforts promotion that resulted in improved benefits and access to health care for veterans. What is Veterans Day? a brief history
Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day, and November 11 had special significance in 1918, when at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year the German Armistice came into effect, formally ending the First World War.
Other countries also celebrate this occasion: they call it Remembrance Day.
Beginning in 1926, President Calvin Coolidge issued proclamations calling for the ceremonial observance of Armistice Day, and in 1938, the United States Congress made the day a legal holiday.
On “Veteran's Father's Day,” World War II veteran Raymond Weeks called for expanding Armistice Day to include all veterans, not just those who served in World War I, and the first national celebration had place in 1947.
In 1954, the United States Congress established Armistice Day as a federal holiday and, in the process, renamed it Veterans Day.
An interesting fact is that the Veterans Day holiday moved up the calendar over the years: between 1971 and 1977, it was celebrated on the fourth Monday in October. In 1978, it returned to November 11, although if the date falls on a weekend, the federal government observes the holiday on a Friday or Monday.
Like Memorial Day, Veterans Day is a federal holiday dedicated to the country's armed forces. The difference is that Memorial Day honors soldiers who lost their lives in military service, while Veterans Day honors those who served in the military, both living and dead.
In 2016, President Barack Obama signed a law holding two minutes of silence in honor of fallen soldiers. It will take place at 2:11 pm ET on November 11, marking the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour.
