The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will investigate how United Airlines (NASDAQ:UAL) boeing (New York Stock Exchange: BA) The 737-800 plane lost an external panel before landing safely in Oregon on Friday.
United Airlines Flight 433, a Boeing 737-800, landed with 139 passengers and six crew members safely Friday at its scheduled destination at Rogue Valley Medford International Airport in Oregon after taking off from San Francisco, the FAA and the airline said.
The FAA saying that an inspection after landing revealed that a panel was missing and that it will investigate the incident.
“After the plane was parked at the gate, it was discovered that it was missing an external panel,” United Airlines (UAL) told Looking Alpha in an emailed statement, adding that the plane had not called in case of emergency to Medford airport “as there was no indication of damage during the flight.”
“We will conduct a thorough examination of the aircraft and make all necessary repairs before it returns to service. We will also conduct an investigation to better understand how this damage occurred,” United Airlines (UAL) added.
Boeing (BA) had no comment and directed questions to United Airlines (UAL) “for information about its fleet and operations.” According to data from the Aviation Flights group, the plane was 25 years and three months old and was built in December 1998.
Boeing (BA) has been in the spotlight amid the continuing fallout from an accident involving a burst door plug on an Alaska Airlines (ALK) flight in early January. Since that event, the leading aircraft manufacturer's shares have taken a hit, while subsequent aviation incidents have come under close scrutiny.
