(Reuters) – Uber Technologies (NYSE:) has hired former Tesla (NASDAQ:) executive Rebecca Tinucci to oversee the ride-hailing platform's transition to electric vehicles, according to an internal memo seen by Reuters on Tuesday.
Uber has a plan to fully electrify its fleet of vehicles by 2040 and has pledged to invest $800 million through 2025 to help achieve its goal.
Tinucci will take up her role on September 16 as Uber's global head of sustainability and will help oversee the company's transition to a zero-emission platform. She will report directly to Andrew Macdonald, head of Uber's mobility business.
The former Tesla freight chief will also oversee sustainable packaging partnerships and help end unnecessary plastic waste in restaurant deliveries.
“His deep experience and relationships across the automotive industry… will be an incredible asset to the Uber team as we continue to move toward zero emissions,” Macdonald said in the memo.
Tinucci was a top brass at Tesla, leading its electric vehicle charging team before company boss Elon Musk disbanded most of the team as part of broader cost-cutting efforts.
Uber has also been working with major electric vehicle brands like Tesla and Chinese automaker BYD (SZ:) to promote the adoption of battery-powered vehicles.
Uber reported strong second-quarter results earlier this month due to strong demand for ridesharing as more people return to offices and spend freely on its food delivery services.
