This is because the average cost of a fast food meal, or any food, has increased in cost in recent months.
The most recent consumer price (CPI) index found that the cost of food increased by 0.4% in general for the month of March, compared to a month earlier.
The food at home, which is generally bought in the grocery store and presents the typical basic products that one can find in the refrigerator or the pantry, increased 0.5% during the same period.
Food away from home, which is generally classified as foods that would get in a restaurant of any kind, increased by 0.4%.
“The food outside the domestic index increased by 3.8 percent during the last year. The index for full service meals increased 4.1 percent, and the limited service meter index increased 3.4 percent during the same period,” the CPI found.
Restaurants must be creative
Since the cost of food has increased everywhere, it is not surprising that most people are selective about where their money is going.
Inevitably, one of the first expenses to obtain is discretionary spending, which includes things that consumers do not necessarily have to buy to survive.

This means that most restaurants need to tempt customers experimenting with their menu, adding new flavors or offers that make diners feel good when spending money there.
Sonic launches new menu additions
And now, the popular Sonic fast food chain is launching two new items to its growth menu to help bring hungry diners.
The hamburger and the smoothie chain are adding two immersion sauces. They are:
- Ranch Jalapeño
- Dulce Chile of Asian style
The Jalapeno ranch is described as a mixture of “ranch with a savory success of green jalapeños to form a spicy, herber and creamy experience.”

The Asian sweet chili sauce has a “heat and sweetness balance with soy, sesame, garlic and ginger sauce.”
The two new sauces are similar to those of competitors such as Chick Fil A, which offers:
- Chick-Fil-A Sauce
- Honey mustard
- Parilla
- Polynesian
- Spicy buffalo
- Sweet and Spicy Sriracha
- Roasted barbecue with honey
- Garden herbal ranch
