How does Spotify make money?
Spotify has two main sources of income: advertising and subscriptions. Advertisers pay the streaming platform to deliver visual and audio ads to its users, and Spotify Premium users pay the platform a monthly fee for ad-free listening and the ability to download music for offline listening.
Spotify uses revenue from these two sources to pay royalties to musicians on its platform.
How does Spotify pay musicians?
Spotify shares streaming revenue with music rights holders (artists, labels, etc.) based on how many times their users stream their songs. These revenues are reportedly shared at a rate of 70% (artists/rightsholders) to 30% (Spotify).
While the above participation model is not confirmed on Spotify's website, what we do know for sure is that artists (or whoever owns the rights to their music) receive between $0.003 and $0.005 per stream, with only streams counting lasting 30 seconds or more. . The amount they receive within that range depends on factors such as the geographic origin of the stream and whether the streamer was a Premium subscriber or not.
One caveat to this model is that any song must have had at least 1000 streams within the last 12 months to be eligible for income sharing. However, the artists listed below have no need to worry about this 1000 stream quota as their songs are streamed in the millions.
