TikTok did not do well in audience.
As TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew testified before the House Committee on Commerce and Energy on March 23, it became clear that the US ban on the social media app was still up for grabs.
Chew mentioned Project Texas, a strategy TikTok says it is implementing to store its data on US users in the country through a partnership it has with Oracle. (ORCL) – Get a free report.

The comment did not impress Rep. August Pfluger, R-Texas.
“Change the name of your project. Texas is not the appropriate name. We stand for freedom and transparency and we don’t want your project,” Pfluger said, according to ABC News.
The audience moved on to the topic of misinformation on the platform. A 2021 post was specifically mentioned showing a fake way to make the drug hydroxychloroquine out of grapefruit and lemon peel.
“What is TikTok doing to try to strengthen their review to prevent this information from reaching people?” asked Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo.
Chew said misinformation violates TikTok’s rules, but said TikTok can’t get rid of everything.
“I don’t think we can sit here and say we’re perfect,” Chew said.
“That’s not good enough for me,” DeGette said later. “That’s not enough for America’s parents.”
Social networks also had a lot to say about the audience.
“TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew Says Legacy US Data Will Be Deleted On Virginia And Singapore Servers: ‘When That Is Done All Protected US Data Will Be Under Protection Of US Law’,” he tweeted. ABC News.
“They have all the data they could ever dream of,” wrote @cainisforgiven. “Millions upon millions of maps and facial profiles of US citizens, etc. It’s too late now.”
“Right now doing this? Wow,” tweeted @IWPguitar.
“The damage is already done” wrote @Blue2000The.
One Twitter user mocked Congress for how it was handling the hearing.
“People should see this stupid congress.” tweeted @23shawthing. “They’re just tearing it apart and not letting it respond. Artificial intelligence is dangerous blah blah. It’s a Chinese company so the US can’t make a profit so they’re crying.”
