Sin City now rivals Nashville for the title of “Music City” and that was cemented when U2 became the first resident act at Sphere Entertainment’s state-of-the-art Las Vegas Sphere.
The band, one of the biggest in the world, but also one of the most modern, by giving their blessing to a Las Vegas residency, essentially clears the way for any band to do so. Of course, few acts, even some really big ones, can fill a 17,000-seat theater night after night, which is why most Las Vegas residencies take place in smaller venues.
However, two of the biggest names in music have expanded their residencies, including one who will play on very special nights.

Kelly Clarkson returned to Planet Hollywood
Kelly Clarkson has had a sporadic residency at Caesars Planet Hollywood for the past few years. She schedules shows around her talk show and her other commitments, which until recently included NBC’s “The Voice.”
Now, the singer is bringing her “Chemistry…An Intimate Performance” back to Planet Hollywood’s Bakkt Theater for a special series of shows. The dates will include a New Year’s Eve show and a Super Bowl weekend show. The new dates are December 30. -February 31 and 9 and 10. Tickets go on sale at 10:00 a.m.

Lionel Richie extends his residency on the Las Vegas Strip
Lionel Richie spans the ages of the Las Vegas Strip. He is an older performer with classic hits, but remains relevant to younger audiences due to his appearance on “American Idol.”
The singer, who has hits dating back to the 1970s, has a long-running residency at Wynn’s Encore Theatre. Richie’s “King of Hearts” residency has added 17 dates between June 26 and November 16, the Las Vegas Magazine reported.
Richie has sold out 39 shows since opening his Wynn Resorts (WYNN) – Get a free report residency in 2019. Before that, Richie headlined the Planet Hollywood theater that currently houses Clarkson.

U2, who have been selling out shows at the 17,000-capacity The Sphere, are expected to extend their residency. The new venue has not scheduled a second act to perform, although there has been speculation about The Eagles and Harry Styles, but neither have been confirmed.
Playing the immersive Sphere requires creating a show unique to that venue, limiting its viability to just a few acts. To play the venue, a band or solo artist must be able to sell enough tickets over several nights to justify the expense of creating a show for a single venue.
