(Reuters) – The president of the United States, Donald Trump, suspended the new federal lease of marine wind energy on his first day back to the Oval office on January 20, waiting for an environmental and economic review.
On the same day, the Danish energy company Orsted (CSE :), the largest marine wind company in the world, registered another position for deterioration for delays in an American marine project.
Those are only the last blows to the marine wind industry that former president Joe Biden and several states considered key to meet the federal and state objectives of clean energy.
“Stop marine wind energy represents a big step back in our efforts to promote a future of clean energy and damages the economic opportunities of the State,” the Governor of North Carolina, Josh Stein, a Democrat, told Reuters in an email.
“Investors have signed important lease and invert contracts. They deserve certainty,” Governor Stein said.
In California, where marine wind energy is in the early stages of development, Adam Stern (AS :), Executive Director of Offshore Wind California, a commercial group of the industry, said most of the work was being carried out at the state level.
“As an industry, we are focused and advancing on what marks marine wind energy in California, and at this time most of that is happening at the state level.” That includes an approved expense of approximately 475 million dollars to improve ports and 4.6 billion dollars to improve energy transmission lines to prepare for future marine wind energy projects.
In 2023 and 2024, several marine wind energy companies, including Orsted, suffered billions in cancellations, deteriorations and other cancellation rates after determining that they could no longer complete projects profitable due to the growing construction costs, higher rates of interest and problems in the supply chain.
In New Jersey, who has suffered delays in marine wind energy projects, Governor Phil Murphy, a Democrat, told Reuters in an email that remains committed to clean energy.
“New Jersey will explore all the options available to protect the health of our environment and our residents, while reinforcing energy independence, creates well -paid American jobs, reduces energy invoices and grows the innovation economy of new Jersey, “said Governor Murphy.
There are currently four marine winding projects operating in the USA.
There are also four marine winding projects under construction and several more in development.
The following informative table lists the projects in service and those under construction and in advanced development that were expected to continue despite Trump's review:
