It might be a good idea to invest £10k in stocks and ISA shares right now.
But it is worth remembering that this capital does not have to be invested in shares immediately. Instead, the money can sit there waiting for a tempting opportunity to present itself.
And there’s still a little bit of time left to take advantage of the current ISA allotment before it renews on April 6. But ideally, putting money in each year may be the optimal tactic.
Meanwhile, the markets have been weak. And under such conditions, there may be a better chance of getting bargains on stocks.
invest well
Of what has been written about the growing army of ISA millionaires in the UK, two points stand out. First, many seem to use their ISA allowances as much as they can each year. And second, they tend to invest well.
But what does it mean to invest well? And there is no single answer to that question. In fact, many strategies can be successful when investing in stocks and shares. But there are some approaches that can be problematic.
For example, investing all the money invested in a single stock could cause investors to give up. Though maybe not. But the risks increase without any diversification between different investments.
Pick a fool and you could be game over for any chance of becoming an ISA millionaire. But, on the other hand, there have been some spectacular stock market successes in recent years.
An example is Scientific Judges, which is focused on acquiring and developing businesses within the scientific instrument sector. For 15 years, the company has prospered. And that led to spectacular stock price gains for the company’s shareholders.
But managing a multi-exchange stock often requires weathering reversals, setbacks, and weak periods. And one of the challenges with long-term investing is that it can often take months, or even years, before we know whether or not we’re right about a business.
So if something goes wrong with the stock that is being held, the earnings capitalization process can be disrupted for an investor. And it can take years to recover from such a setback.
Diversification
However, that doesn’t mean you need to avoid small-cap opportunities like Judges Scientific entirely. About 15 years ago, you could have included yourself in a diversified portfolio and still generate life-changing returns. In fact, many of today’s ISA millionaires racked up steady profits from multiple simultaneous investments.
So with £10k to invest in an ISA, you could select multiple stocks. And one of them may become the next scientific judge.
My self-imposed minimum sum to invest in any stock is £2,000. So I would probably pick five stocks with my £10K. And I’d like to invest in a mix of small-cap, mid-cap, and large-cap companies.
There is never a guarantee of positive long-term returns from stocks and shares. But careful research and analysis can work well with a bit of targeted diversification to get you satisfying results. And that’s especially true if we end up with a stock like Judges Scientific in the mix!
