Costco also has a winning approach to the inventory.
The majority of the main retailers carry tens of thousands of sku (maintenance units), but deliberately limits their rotation to approximately 4,000. This allows you to maintain better control over price negotiations and offer members the maximum value of value.

Another reason why Costco has become a power of this type is its signature Kirkland.

Kirkland products represent a third of the annual Costco income. And Kirkland's name has evolved to mean not only lower prices but also quality.
In fact, Costco has a specific strategy to set the price of Kirkland products. During the Third Quarter Gains call of 2024, Financial Director Gary Millerchip said: “We evaluate the potential of new high quality Kirkland sign items with the aim of providing at least a 20% value compared to what we would sell the national brand article.”
Other retailers could take a Kirkland brand lesson in Costco
Costco has done some things well with its Kirkland brand in addition to setting it competitively. First, Costco has made sure to emphasize quality.
Store brands often have the reputation of being cheap alternatives to brands. Kirkland has the reputation of being more affordable and The same as quality, if not superior.

Costco has also gone well with the brand of his store by associating with the main companies to produce Kirkland products. For years, some of Kirkland's most popular coffee products come from no less than Starbucks.
The other Costco victory in Kirkland has attached to the same brand in its product channels.
Some could call that risky, since having multiple private labels allows retailers to adapt the names to specific categories. And in that scenario, a bad experience with a brand may not automatically turn off consumers of another.
But Costco trusts both its Kirkland brand that you are not worried about that. Costco would prefer to generate confidence in its signature brand focusing on the quality of each product it sells.
“If they do not trust the brand in the golf ball, they do not trust the mixed nuts,” said Claudine Adamo, Costco EVP and director of marketing operations.

Several industry experts agree that Costco's approach to their Kirkland brand is a real game change.
Gary Sankary, a 50 -year -old veteran from the retail industry with great names like Target in his curriculum, is a fan of the single -brand Costco strategy.
“Costco is taking advantage of the fact that its entire store and organization are a single brand,” he said. “Seeing large bicycle boxes through the process of introducing and withdrawing their own brand labels every few years to convince customers that the new is better, at the same time, is confusing and, in many cases, dilutes its brand.”
Robert Amster has successfully served retail and distribution industries as a consultant and executive for more than 45 years. He feels that the emphasis of costco in quality is what he does, and the Kirkland brand, a true winner.
“The quality of the Kirkland brand is not diluted just just because it is a private label,” he said. “In fact, in many cases I have experienced, the product of the Kirkland brand is so good or better than the brands announced nationally.”
