The fast-food giant has a classic version of the cheeseburger that McDonald’s and Wendy’s have no answer for.
Burger King takes a more is more approach when it comes to innovation. The fast food giant tries many things, and while many of them fail, some become menu staples that the chain can use in a variety of ways.
That’s what Burger King has done with its “Melts,” a fast-food take on a classic burger melt where toasted bun replaces a classic bun and melted cheese is used liberally. The chain introduced its own take on this staple last March when it added three variations of its Whopper Melt: the Whopper Melt, the Spicy Whopper Melt, and the Bacon Whopper Melt.

international restaurant brands (QSR) – Get a free report The brand went on to add a line of Breakfast Melts in May 2022. These came with a choice of Black Forest sausage, bacon or ham, with two slices of American cheese and a fluffy folded egg on toasted round bread.
Now, the chain is bringing a different take on the Melts by adding three new versions of the sandwich to its menu. And it also has a fresh take on one of its most unique menu items.
Burger King brings back the melts
This time, Burger King won’t be leveraging the Whopper name when it rolls out its new Melts nationwide on March 6. The new Melts are closer to what you might get at a restaurant, albeit with a few Burger King twists:
- classic melt: Features two slices of toasted bread, topped with two grilled Whopper Jr. burgers, melted American cheese, caramelized onions and Stacker sauce.
- spicy melt: Features two slices of toasted bread, topped with two Whopper Jr. burgers, topped with melted American cheese, jalapeños, caramelized onions and a tangy creamy sauce.
- melted bacon: Features two slices of toasted bread, topped with two Whopper® Jr. burgers, melted American cheese, crispy bacon, caramelized onions and Stacker sauce.
These seem pretty similar to the Whopper Melts, though they use different sauces and with slight changes to what’s included. Not using the Whopper name is an interesting choice at a time when it has made a difference, as it’s one of the few things on Burger King’s menu that really separates it from what McDonald’s is. Wendy’s recently brought back its Bourbon Bacon Cheeseburger, while McDonald’s surprisingly added a triple cheeseburger to its menu. Burger King and Wendy’s have been much more innovative by offering new limited-time deals, while McDonald’s has focused on digital promotions and celebrity eats.
Burger King adds spicy chicken fries
At the same time that it is bringing Melts back to the menu, Burger King will also be adding a new variation on its Chicken Fries. Sort of like a chicken nugget/finger shaped like a French fry, chicken fries have become a Burger King exclusive item. Now, the chain presents a spicy new version.
“Seasoned to perfection with a blend of spices sure to pack a punch, Spicy Chicken Fries are the latest innovation for the product line following previous iterations of the product, including Buffalo Chicken Fries, Pretzel Chicken Fries, Jalapeno Chicken Fries and more,” the fast food chain shared in a press release.
To celebrate these changes, Burger King will also offer members of its “Royal Perks” loyalty program the opportunity to enter a special “Royal Madness” draw. Starting March 9, members can use the chain’s app or website to “win over $200,000 worth of instant prizes, a chance to win a grand prize, and access to a special line of Melt meals.” .
