LONDON (Reuters) – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Saturday he would defend decisions made in the first budget of his new Labor government “all day long”, as farmers protested changes to inheritance tax.
Addressing the Welsh Labor Conference in Llandudno, north Wales, Starmer did not directly address farmers' complaints but said he respected the decisions made in Finance Minister Rachel's October 30 budget statement. Reeves.
“Make no mistake, I will defend our budget decisions all day,” he said.
“I will stand up to facing the harsh light of fiscal reality, I will stand up for the tough decisions that were necessary to stabilize our economy.”
As Starmer spoke, hundreds of farmers protested outside the conference venue over a budget measure that will mean more of them will have to pay inheritance tax.
They have warned that the measure will threaten the viability of farms, make products more expensive and threaten food security.
Farmers plan a large protest in London on November 19.
UK businesses have also warned that increased employment taxes and an increase in the minimum wage in the Budget will stoke inflation and have a negative impact on investment and employment.
