(Reuters) – amazon (NASDAQ said on Tuesday it ordered 200 Mercedes-Benz (OTC eActros 600 all-electric heavy-duty vehicles from Daimler to serve the German and U.K. markets in its largest electric truck order yet .
The e-commerce giant said the trucks will begin joining its network later this year and will be deployed on “high-mileage routes” along amazon's half-mile network between fulfillment centers, sortation centers and stations. of delivery.
“This is an important milestone for us,” Andreas Marschner, amazon's vice president of Worldwide Operations Sustainability, told Reuters. “Decarbonizing the heavy goods sector is the most challenging part of the transportation space.”
This order is part of amazon's commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions across all of its operations by 2040. It is also the largest electric truck order yet for the Mercedes-Benz Trucks brand, Daimler said.
Aside from a price tag well above diesel truck equivalents, logistics companies have struggled to find electric trucks that have enough range to handle demanding delivery routes and the charging infrastructure to keep them on the road.
The 40-tonne eActros 600 has a range of 500 km (311 miles), which Marschner says makes it adaptable to amazon's delivery network.
But he added that amazon is supporting the truck rollout by building a 360-kilowatt fast-charging network at its own sites, which can charge a truck from 20% to 80% in less than an hour, “which “It is also compatible with legal norms.” the driver brakes.”

He said efforts to boost charging infrastructure in the European Union and the United States Kingdom (TADAWUL:) are still in the early stages and amazon is working with collection companies and regulators to accelerate investments.
“Major transportation corridors in the U.K. and Germany are still very limited and the public and high-capacity loads we would need for trucks,” Marschner said. “This is a challenge today as it reduces the ability to utilize these assets.”
