What are pixels?
Pixels focuses on fun social activities, casual gameplay, and resource gathering. The game takes place in a 16-bit stylized open world where players engage in a variety of activities such as farming, exploring, and completing quests.
Players can also purchase farmland, allowing them to design an island for other players to explore, plant crops, and craft resources on. Landowners receive a share of the crops grown on their land, incentivizing players to develop land that is pleasing to the eye, but more importantly, efficient in terms of the farming plots and crafting options available.
All actions in the game (other than movement) require players to use energy, which recharges over time or can be restored by using in-game food, using the in-game sauna, or joining time-limited energy pools.
Raw resources can be transformed into other items, for example by cooking food, brewing beer, or crafting items such as furniture and tools, and some of these require specific blueprints or recipes obtained through gameplay or events.
With the ability to design an in-game avatar or import nfts from top collections as their avatar, players can also develop character skills, interact with others, and socialize, with the goal of creating a thriving virtual community.
How pixels work
A key feature of Pixels is that it costs nothing to get started. New players can start their farms on free land, called Specks, to begin generating resources. These resources can be sold for “coins,” the game’s main currency, which is used to purchase initial upgrades for Specks, lower-level crafting kits, and basic resources.
Players can also earn coins by completing missions, participating in events, and achieving milestones in the game.
There is also a premium in-game currency called $PIXEL, the native token of Pixels. It can be purchased directly through exchanges, where it is currently trading at $0.23 USD, or earned by completing missions, supporting the play-to-earn nature of the game.
While the $PIXEL token is not absolutely necessary to progress through the game, it is designed to enhance the gameplay experience. Players spend $PIXEL to purchase items more quickly and access cosmetic upgrades and enhancements outside of the main game.
$PIXEL can also be used to purchase Pixel VIP, an exclusive membership level that offers a host of benefits, such as additional opportunities to earn more $PIXEL, reduced fees in the in-game marketplace, and more. Pixel VIP currently costs $10 USD/month in $PIXEL.

Pixels began development in November 2021 and integrated its first non-fungible token (nft) collections in the same month. Features such as Farming, Farmlands, and Quest were quickly added and rolled out in early 2022.
Chapter 1 was released in late 2022 and introduced a number of new elements, including new characters, quests, an improved user interface, and an extensive rework of the game's mechanics.
The pixels shifted from the twitter.com/0xPolygonDeFi”>Polygonal network to Ronin in late 2023, creating a better experience for players and supporting the continued growth and development of the game.
In June 2024, Chapter 2 was released, bringing more significant updates. New skills were added, the market was revamped, and new shops were added that improved the game mechanics. A new avatar system was added with visual updates for NPCs.
The game’s rapid development continues to be guided by three key pillars: prioritizing fun, embracing interoperability, and gradually decentralizing control. The ultimate goal is to decentralize more aspects of the game, allowing players to have a greater say in its direction and governance.
