At a recent rally in Laconia, New Hampshire, former US President Donald Trump reiterated his opposition to the concept of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).
In a recent statement, former US President Donald Trump reiterated his strong opposition to central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) and vowed to prevent their launch. This stance aligns him with Vivek Ramaswamy, a pro-crypto candidate who just suspended his campaign. Trump's January 18 statement marks a significant moment in the ongoing debate over the future of digital currencies in the US financial system.
I will never allow the creation of a Central Bank Digital Currency.

Trump explained that his objection is motivated by a deep concern for personal freedom. He believes such a system could limit personal freedoms.
This would be a dangerous threat to freedom and I will prevent it from reaching the United States. (…) Such a currency would give the federal government absolute control over its money. They could take your money and you wouldn't even know it was gone.

The election campaign has seen similar sentiments from other Republican candidates. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, another critic of CBDCs, also suspended his campaign and supported Trump. “It is clear to me that the majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance,” Desantis said, pledging to keep his promise to support the Republican candidate. The recent withdrawals of DeSantis and Ramaswamy from the primary race suggest a potential shift in the political climate surrounding crypto discourse.
Trump has shown a dual stance towards cryptocurrencies. In 2019, he saying that bitcoin (btc) “seems like a scam” and explained that he “doesn't like it because it is another currency that competes against the dollar.”
At the same time, Trump had no problem capitalizing on blockchain technology and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). In December 2023, he launched an nft collection called 'Mugshot Edition', and this wasn't even the first nft collection the former US president released.
