This release marks the first limited edition variants of Don Julio 1942, which is typically aged for up to 32 months in American white oak barrels. The new versions are finished in ex-bourbon, ruby port, Portuguese Madeira wine, orange wine and Crémant casks.
Each expression is limited to one barrel, equivalent to forty cases or 240 bottles.
A piece of luxury tequila history
The auction is now active and starts at $35,000 per barrel and the five highest bidders will each receive the 240 bottles of the chosen expression. This auction will close on June 20.
The sale involves nfts to manage ownership and distribution, and the barrels will be stored at the Don Julio distillery until March 25, 2025. At that point, each barrel nft will be converted into forty individual case nfts, which can be resell through BlockBar. Physical bottles are expected to be available in mid-2025.
Sophie Kelly, senior vice president of global tequila and mezcal categories at Diageo, said: “We recognize that, for many, luxury tequilas are seen as an extension of lifestyle, so we are meeting demand from potential buyers and creators. of trends of not only owning an extremely rare and super luxurious tequila, but owning a part of the history and legacy of Tequila Don Julio.”
