Crashing into the NFT space like a fully loaded freight train, a new 20k collection has caused quite a stir in the world of non-fungible tokens. In just over a week, the mysterious I’m tired they have outperformed the Bored Ape Yacht Club in all time trades and posted a mammoth 52,000 sales.
So far, the collection has amassed a trading volume of 8,183 ETH, or about $14.5 million at press time. The acceptance of Nakamigos has left many within the Web3 space wondering: what is it about the project that has the NFT community buzzing? At its core, the collection is made up of 20,000 24×24 pixel characters that bear a vague resemblance to CryptoPunks.
There is a lot of speculation about the origin of the project, which has created intrigue among collectors. The first part of the project name pays homage to Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous founder of Bitcoin. While the second part, amigos, is the Spanish word for friends. therefore, combined, the name becomes ‘Nakamoto’s friends’ or Nakamigos.

Who is behind Nakamigos?
Like Bitcoin, the creator of Nakamigos remains anonymous. A project blog post describes them as “an OG crypto artist”. This has led to speculation on Crypto Twitter as to who it could be, with many suspecting Sartoshi, the NFT influencer and artist behind the Mfers collection.
Sartoshi left the Mfers project last June when he handed over control of the 10,021 stick figures to the Mfers community, while also issuing an ‘end of Sartoshi’ pass. Only to reappear from his self-imposed exile six months later and announce the arrival of Nakamigos, notifying eos pass holders of their eligibility to mint pieces of the collection for free. Each holder was allowed to mint a single NFT on March 22 before the collection opened to the public the next day.
Nakamigos has also been linked to Larva Labs, the company behind CryptoPunks. However, the project has refuted these claims. Some speculators point to the aesthetic similarities between the collection and CryptoPunks, in addition to the fact that its license agreement resembles that of the famous collection.
While little is known about the project so far, all of this speculation has created the perfect storm for Nakamigos to surpass BAYC in lifetime trades.
