Despite banning NFTs in the popular sandbox title Minecraft in July 2022, developers Mojang and publishers Microsoft have greenlit an integration of world currencya biometric cryptocurrency project headed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
The integration allows Minecraft server owners to restrict access only to players who possess a World ID, a proof-of-humanity digital passport created by Worldcoin that requires an in-person iris scan to obtain.

Minecraft vs. nft
In July 2022, Mojang announced a complete ban on any nft integration with its main title, citing issues related to “scarcity and exclusion that conflict with our Guidelines and the spirit of Minecraft.”
This had a huge impact on a wide range of web3 projects, the largest of which, nft Worlds, had generated trading volume in the hundreds of millions of dollars, and the project has since pivoted to create its own voxel kingdom.
Mojang's green light on Worldcoin integration is the first sign of a thaw in the team's stance in nearly 18 months.
Sam Altman and Microsoft
Microsoft has invested heavily in ai in recent years, initially landing a major partnership and then buying a 49% stake in Sam Altman's company OpenAI, creators of ChatGPT.
Following Sam's dramatic firing and rehiring in November 2023, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has publicly backed Altman on numerous occasions, but this is the first sign that Microsoft is open to exploring how they can work. with Altman's Worldcoin company.
The Worldcoin x Minecraft integration does not leverage the native $WLD token, but instead solely uses World ID technology to verify player authenticity. This keeps the integration in line with Minecraft's strict anti-nft EULA policy and allows US players to access these World ID-restricted servers without requiring exposure to the $WLD token.
