The new text-based content app, codenamed P92, will be powered by ActivityPub, a decentralized social networking protocol.
Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ: META), the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has begun work on a unique decentralized social network. According to a Reuters reportthe platform will be used to share text updates and has also been suggested to compete directly with billionaire Elon Musk’s Twitter.
Meta seeks to ensure ease of access by integrating with Instagram
The new text-based content app, codenamed P92, will be powered by ActivityPub, a decentralized social networking protocol. It might be worth mentioning that ActivityPub already works with Mastodon and a few other decentralized apps that currently compete with Twitter.
Unlike how Twitter and Facebook are controlled by a single authority, Mastodon’s likes are so decentralized that they are installed on several thousand computer servers and are managed by volunteer administrators who form a community after joining their systems together.
Meanwhile, Meta will also integrate its upcoming app, codenamed P92, with Instagram in a ‘fork’ approach. That is, users who have previously registered with Instagram will be able to register and log in to the P92 using their Instagram credentials. In this way, there is an automated population of the P92 profiles of such users with their account details, including their name, username, bio, profile picture, etc.
More rival platforms emerge against Twitter
As previously reported by Coinspeaker, the number of Twitter users seeking alternative platforms continues to grow by the day. And tech companies and startups are increasingly interested in taking advantage of this growing trend.
In recent months, several rival platforms have emerged such as Mastodon, Post.news, T2 and others. Some of them have been launched while others are continuing their pre-launch efforts to attract this user group.
As far as the P92 project is concerned, their current plan, for now, is to just allow users to broadcast posts to people on other servers. However, that too could be subject to change as time goes by. Therefore, users may be allowed to follow and view the content of people on other servers.
The initial version of the app will also reportedly have common sharing features such as username, user bio, verification badges, images, and video. It will also feature follow and like functionalities. But it’s not clear if the first version of the product will also include commenting and messaging features.
