Tron founder Justin Sun bought the famous banana sculpture taped to the wall for $6.2 million at Sotheby's after six minutes of bidding. He says he will “personally eat the banana.”
On November 21, Justin Sun posted about his recent Sotheby's purchase of Maurizio Cattelan's “Comedian” artwork, which is simply a lone banana taped to a wall.
“This is not just a work of art; represents a cultural phenomenon that unites the worlds of art, memes, and the cryptocurrency community,” Sun wrote in his <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://x.com/justinsuntron/status/1859403540315373942″ target=”_blank”>x publication.
The TRON (TRX) creator also revealed that he plans to “eat the banana as part of this unique artistic experience, honoring its place in both art history and popular culture.”
Upon purchasing the sculpture, Sun received a certificate of authenticity giving him the right to display the piece as an official work of art, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-11-21/cattelan-duct-taped-banana-sells-for-6-2-million-at-sotheby-s-auction?srnd=phx-crypto” target=”_blank” rel=”nofollow”>Bloomberg report. In addition, Sotheby's also provided Sun with a starter kit for the sculpture, consisting of a banana, a roll of masking tape and a detailed instruction manual on how the piece should be presented.

Sun hopes the piece can inspire further discussions and “become part of history” as it creates inspiration and impact for art enthusiasts around the world.
The sculpture first debuted in 2019 at Art Basel Miami Beach. It was exhibited on a stand at the Galerie Perrotin.
Despite its simplicity, the artwork attracted a large crowd of spectators. It didn't take long for Cattelan's banana to become a world-famous meme. It appeared on the cover of the New York Post with the headline “Bananas!” and has been replicated as various forms of merchandise.
Before Sun, there have also been other cases in which the famous banana was eaten. In April of last year, a South Korean student reportedly He ate the banana taped to the wall when it was on display at Seoul's Leeum Art Museum. The banana was later replaced and the museum did not press charges against the student.
