I think Sunday mornings are for lazy breakfasts and good reading in bed. But if it’s a rare sunny day in your part of the world, I recommend taking your reading to an outdoor cafe, park bench, or even under a tree, whatever takes your fancy. While I can’t promise you a great read, I do guarantee something to ponder, something inspiring, or maybe even a shred of hope.

welcome to NFTs driving change—a bi-monthly column highlighting projects and creators using NFTs and other Web3 tools to create real-world impact. In this issue, I’ll introduce you to German-based film production company Rejell, who has just entered the Web3 world with their first NFT collection.

Rejell drops are all about NFT art and philanthropy

When NFTs gained traction in early 2021, it didn’t take long for people to see the philanthropic potential behind the technology. Soon enough, everyone from NGOs to activists to celebrities launched NFTs to support a number of causes. Now, Rejell is jumping on the NFT charity bandwagon with a series of NFT collections.

The vision of the film production company is to collaborate with different artists to create “beautiful and meaningful art”, while supporting social and/or sustainable organizations. Simply put, each collection focuses on a particular theme, with 50% of the proceeds going to a related charity.

About Origin, Rejell’s debut NFT project

Rejell’s debut NFT project, titled “Origin”, features 40 photographs captured by artist Torben Reimer. Interestingly, Reimer used an old analogue camera, on a timer, attached to a racing drone to capture the photos.

One of the things I found most interesting about Origin is the unpredictability of the art-making process itself. The manually set timer gave only an 11 second window to position a shot. The old cameras weren’t always reliable. From figuring out the correct speeds for drones to avoiding hitting trees, the process seems like a gamble.

As the creators point out on their website: “There was no way to verify the images and recalibrate the camera settings accordingly. We just kept the faith that enough magic would be captured in our images to be worthy of this new realm that now exists beyond time in NFT form.”

Nonetheless, the results are stunning surreal shots of tree-covered landscapes and shorelines. There is a chaotic beauty to these images that instantly draws the viewer in.

NFTs are now available for sale on OpenSea. Half of the funds will go to The Climate Change Fund, an NGO that focuses on climate change mitigation. In addition, collectors of all ten unique 1 of 1 NFTs will also get a print of the artwork and the photographic negative.

Q&A with the Rejell team

I spoke to Reinhard Krug, Rejell’s Head of NFT and Creative Director, and Torben Reimer to find out more about Rejell’s NFT plans.

(Quotes have been edited and condensed for clarity)

NFTE: Tell us about Rejell.

RK: We are a film production company based in Hamburg, Germany, where storytelling is at the heart of everything we do. From long-form films like documentaries to captivating commercials and music videos, we use the power of storytelling to drive change and make a positive impact. Our portfolio is a testament to our talent, with notable clients such as UNIQLO and tennis legend Roger Federer, and our commitment to sustainability through our work with the cradle to cradle institute, EPEA.

NFTE: What inspired you to venture into the NFT space?

RK: Art and technology are two peas in a pod, and digital art was the natural progression for us. Our passion for storytelling and our drive for positive change come together perfectly in this medium. We create impressive and impactful digital masterpieces that are not only beautiful, but also meaningful. And with the power of NFT technology, we’ve gone a step further by combining our artistry with the ability to give back to social and sustainability organizations through donations. Furthermore, our goal is to help our current and future clients to take their first steps in this space and together launch projects using Web3 as a platform forever.

NFTE: What are some of the causes you will be supporting with your NFT drops and why?

RK: Our mission is to make a difference in the world through our films and art. Our goal is to support global organizations that are at the forefront of fighting for important causes like social justice, education, and climate change. We take great care in researching which organizations to support to ensure that each donation has the greatest possible impact. With each new collection, we remain committed to driving positive change and making a difference.

NFTE: What are your reasons for supporting The Climate Change Fund for your first collection?

RK: Climate change is no longer a distant threat; It is a reality we face every day. It is time for us to take action and make a difference. At the top of our priority list is combating its effects and reducing emissions. After extensive research, we found The Climate Change Fund to be a highly effective organization leading the charge in the fight against climate change. They advocate for crucial global policy change and work tirelessly to convince world leaders to adopt policies that help mitigate emissions.

NFTE: What are your thoughts on the role of NFT in creating real world impact? How do you think NFTs can be used for good?

RK: NFTs simplify the donation process, making it easier to collect and track contributions. He WWF NFA Collection and the Ukraine CAD are excellent examples. The technology can also be used to easily track carbon credits. ReFi (regenerative finance) is also in its infancy. What everyone has is the potential to build a community and raise awareness for a cause. Unlike traditional fundraising, NFTs offer tangible feedback to donors in the form of digital art pieces. As NFTs continue to gain recognition as proof of ownership, we expect to see even more innovative applications in the future.

NFTE: Can you tell us about your upcoming NFT collections?

RK: Unfortunately, I can’t say anything about our next collection, yet. What I will say is that we are talking to some amazing artists that we will be collaborating with. For us, it’s about finding the perfect balance between the artist, the artwork and the organization we will support.

NFTE: Origin has a very interesting creative process. Can you tell us more about it?

TR: Combining my passion for modern technology and the history of photography, I set out to create a unique mix of old and new. With the latest drone technology, I am able to capture stunning shots that were previously impossible. The sheer speed and precision of a drone opens up a world of creative possibilities. I love the way the motion blur paints the landscapes in a beautiful abstract way and combines the elements of our background.

NFTE: What message do you want people to take away from Origin?

TR: As inhabitants of this incredible planet, it is our responsibility to treat it with the love and respect it deserves. We must strive to preserve and protect our home, always mindful of the impact we have on the world around us. It is essential to remember that, deep down, we all share a common bond. Regardless of our differences, we all come from the same origin.
