In a recent update, “x(formerly known as Twitter) has quietly removed the option for its paid subscribers to use profile picture (PFP) NFTs.
The social media platform's shift comes amid a series of new initiatives and visions outlined by Musk for the platform in 2024, focusing instead on peer-to-peer payments and advanced artificial intelligence tools.

NFTs Thrive Amid Social Media Changes
The nft profile picture feature was first introduced in January 2022 under the previous leadership of Twitter. It allowed Twitter Blue subscribers to use ethereum-minted NFTs (ERC-721 or ERC-1155 tokens) as profile pictures, which were displayed in a distinctive hexagonal shape.
Users could click or tap the profile image, allowing them to access details about the nft, including information about its collection, contract address, TokenID, and the app used for minting.
However, X has now quietly removed all references to the nft profile picture feature from its X Premium support page. The description above detailed how Premium subscribers could temporarily link their crypto wallets to set an nft as their profile picture, which would then be displayed in a hexagonal shape, indicating ownership.
Although people currently using NFTs as profile pictures still retain their hexagonal avatars, it remains to be seen if X plans to remove them in the future as well.
X's removal of this feature aligns with a broader trend among social networks, as many have begun to scale back their nft-related features. For example, Instagram and Facebook experimented with displaying and publishing NFTs in 2022, but Meta discontinued nft support in March 2023.
Despite the fall of some high value tokens such as Bored Ape Yacht Club, the nft market has recently shown signs of resurgence. Trading volumes have surpassed $1.6 billion, nft aggregator CryptoSlam reported, indicating a recovery in the digital asset market.
