If there was one influential NFT moment worthy of a drum roll, it would surely be the long-awaited announcement of Doodles 2. An expansion to the ecosystem that’s been in the works for about a year now, the anticipated next iteration of the beloved Doodles project is finally on the horizon. . But surprise: it will not take place on Ethereum.
While this may come as less of a surprise to fans who have been following the brand since 2021, considering that plans for Doodles 2 were originally unveiled last summer, a cross-chain venture of such magnitude is certainly not something to be left to the random. But it seems that Doodle owners and adjuncts need not worry because as 2023 approaches, the strange, vast, and colorful world founded by Evan Keast, Jordan Castro, and Scott Martin (burnt toast) have been creating will be revealed.
What is Doodles 2?
Although those in the NFT space may have mixed opinions about the form and frequency of communication transmitted over the scribble twitter account, it cannot be ruled out that significant project developments have occurred over the past year. From Space Doodles to Dooplicator, Genesis Box, Doodle Records, and of course the addition of CEO Julian Holguin and Pharrell Williams to the executive team, members of the Doodle community have a lot to look forward to.
However, throughout the ups and downs of the NFT market, one thing has stayed the same: Doodles is a collection with a limit of 10,000 PFP NFTs. No more no less. But now, with the introduction of Doodles 2, the project aims to expand the ecosystem.
“Doodles 2’s mission is to make our Burnt Toast digital identity and style accessible to everyone. Over the past year and a half, we’ve learned that some of the best retention tools are community, engaging art, self-expression, and personalization,” Castro said in an interview with nft now. “But, you know, there are some frictions and obstacles with that. The doodles right now are multiple ETH each, and there are only 10,000 of them. This is our solution to get people into our community and into our NFT ecosystem.”

Set to be much more than a companion project, Doodles 2 will exist as an entirely new initiative aimed at onboarding more Doodles enthusiasts, especially those outside of the Ethereum NFT ecosystem. Marketed as “A Doodle for Everyone,” the new effort, coming on the heels of Acquisition of Doodles from Award-winning animation studio Golden Wolf focuses on dynamic NFTs built on the Flow blockchain.
Roham Gharegozlou, CEO of dapper labs (where both Keast and Castro worked), told nft now that he’s excited to see the company grow, noting that they’re perfectly positioned to help build the future of Web3. “Doodles is already an iconic brand with an incredibly vibrant community. With an easy user experience, scalable technology, and no gas charges in Flow, Doodles 2 will open up your universe to everyone. The next wave of Web3 adoption is all about utility and fun, and it’s exciting to see Doodles leading the way,” he said.
What should collectors expect from this expansion?
When it comes to mechanics, details will come into play on January 31. In this One day, Doodle owners will be rewarded and the project will start its multi-chain journey by activating the Dooplicator, a “super powerful device” declared to have “perpetual utility” even beyond Doodles 2.
Duplication will be the first step of the Doodles 2 journey through which holders can mint the first edition of Doodles 2 wearables. Thereafter, the next step will begin about a month later when the Genesis Box opens for headlines coin second edition portable devices. Additionally, each edition of handheld devices unlocked during this launch period will include a Doodles 2 Beta Pass, giving holders access to a private beta version of the tool to create their own Doodle in the near future.
“When we say Doodles 2, what we really mean is a customizable Doodle. […] Unlike the original collection, Doodles 2 has two different types of NFTs,” Castro said. The first is the Doodle. Think of it like a mannequin, a basic character. You can customize different attributes on your Doodle. And these are all string properties. The second type of NFT is the portable. And those portable devices can be combined with your Doodle to create the look you are looking for.
Starting off, Doodle holders will be able to customize their NFT’s body, hairstyle, emotion, and of course wearables. Basically, this will create a new micro-economy of Doodles where everyone can buy, sell, and trade portable NFTs. With Doodles 2, users can create a basic level Doodle, choose generic characteristics like skin tone and hair color, and change their appearance as often as they like. In the future, owners can expect new wearable collections to launch via marquees, some featuring online merchandise and brand collaborations with partners, musicians, and creators. Features will also include switching between a full body or PFP perspective and unlocking an animated version of your own NFT, complete with original music.
“Our core community, the people who use their Doodles as a kind of social representation for themselves and create derivative works of art, they put their Doodle in different environments, they create a lot. Ultimately, it becomes a part of who they are on social media,” Holguín said in an interview with nft now.
He continued, “the great thing about Doodles 2 is that it gives [holders] more tools to really create that digital representation of themselves. That, you know, creates a lot more opportunities to establish that sense of identity that we’re ultimately looking for. And that is another reason why the Flow blockchain really works very well for this product, as well as bringing in the multi-million people that we hope to one day.”
Doodles 2 in Flow, what’s next?
Although Doodles 2 will be hosted on Flow, the founder of the project announced that he would continue to invest in the Doodles ecosystem on Ethereum. Noting that the future of NFTs appears to be multi-chain, the project’s founding team stated through a press release that other initiatives, such as expanded licensing opportunities and expanded access within the Doodles ecosystem, will always live with the original collection of NFTs. Doodles.
“We are not married to Flow for future products. We are going to choose and use the right chain for the problem we are trying to solve,” Castro said. “Yes, [Doodles 2] It is a product to reach the masses. But contextualizing it in how we are seeing space at the moment. […] The idea of being multi-chain, we believe, is necessary to advance on our roadmap”, added Holguín.
While it remains to be seen what kind of impact the expansion of Flow will have on the Doodles community, it’s clear that the Doodles team remains committed to efforts that have the potential to help define what it means to be a Web3 brand. As we have seen in other influential NFT projects, instances where IP is unlocked and expanded out to the community are often successful in creating value and breaking new ground.
