In what is becoming a growing trend for record labels, Def Jam has teamed up with the Solana-based NFT project, Catalina Whale Blender, to launch a virtual NFT gang. According to an announcement made on February 7, the band will consist of whale avatars from the Solana-based Profile Picture Collection (PFP). As for the music, it will come from a “star cast” of musicians and producers whose names have not yet been revealed. Also, Whale NFT holders will have a say in how the Whales gang is run.
According To Carlo Fox, the CEO of WAGMI Beach, the studio behind the Catalina Whale Mixer, Whale NFT holders will also have the chance to have their own NFT avatars in the band through an upcoming audition process.
Fox also adds that his team’s entertainment industry experience positions him to “take advantage of these opportunities” for your community. Therefore, in the future, fans can look forward to upbeat and energetic music from the newly formed virtual band.
What inspired Def Jam and Catalina Whale Mixer to create a virtual NFT band?
On his team’s inspiration for the virtual band, Fox cites Gorillaz, a popular non-NFT virtual band, and legendary musician and producer Pharrell Williams, who is involved in the Doodles NFT project.
For now, not much is known about the virtual band’s plans; however, Benjamin Willis, co-founder of WAGMI Beach, notes that the title of the band’s working album will be “A Vibes Compilation”.
Def Jam’s partnership with mixer Catalina Whale for a musical act based on NFT reflects Kingship’s efforts. Another virtual band that is made up of Bored Ape Yacht Club avatars with the goal of releasing music in the metaverse. Kingship is a product of 10:22PM, a sublabel belonging to Universal Music Group (UMG). It is the label that also houses Def Jam Records.
