Bill Gates recently said that Elon Musk seeking to colonize Mars does not paint it in the best philanthropic light.
Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) founder Bill Gates recently questioned the search for colonization of Mars headed by tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk. In a press briefing, Gates opined that Musk’s longstanding ambition to colonize Mars is not a good use of money. According to the Microsoft co-founder and former CEO, Mars funding would better serve humanity by facilitating vaccine development. Gates also suggested that he doesn’t consider his billionaire colleague a good philanthropist, given his current priorities. However, the former Microsoft chairman added that his view on whether the Tesla boss is philanthropic might one day change.
Pointing to Musk’s most famous company, Gates explained:
“Things like Tesla are having a positive impact, even without being a form of philanthropy. I think he will one day join the ranks of philanthropists using his wits.”
Also, on why funding vaccine development was a better use of resources than sending people to Mars, Gates said that “Actually, it is quite expensive to go to Mars. You can buy measles vaccines and save lives for a thousand dollars per life saved.”
Emphatic in his assessment of priorities and the potentially rewarding feeling of positively impacting more lives, Gates concluded: “Don’t go to Mars.”
Mars Development marks Bill Gates and Elon Musk’s latest ‘media bout’
Bill Gates and Elon Musk have clashed frequently over the years, even before the development of Mars colonization emerged. Last April, the Tesla CEO revealed that he asked Gates if he was shorting Tesla, betting that the electric vehicle company’s share value would plummet. This development suggested that Musk felt that the Microsoft co-founder was not on his side.
However, in a previous case, Gates took the high road when asked if he was really shorting Tesla stock. In a February 2021 CNBC interview, the seasoned American business mogul said:
“I’m not talking about my investments, but I think he should be very proud of what he’s done.”
in a Bloomberg interview Also two years ago, Gates covered a number of era-related topics, including Bitcoin (BTC), Covid developments, and social media misinformation. The Microsoft billionaire’s response seemed innocuous when he was asked about Tesla and Musk’s claims to short TSLA shares. According to Gates at the time, he wished he had “been more on the long side” of the electric vehicle company.
In 2020, when Gates revealed that he bought an all-electric Porsche Taycan, a Twitter The user asked why the Microsoft visionary did not opt for Tesla. Musk also expressed nonchalance about Gates’ choice of EV cars and hinted at a bad relationship between the two billionaires. According to Elon Musk at the time, “My discussions with Gates have been disappointing. [to be honest].”
