“And those who were seen dancing were considered crazy by those who couldn’t hear the music.” Friedrich Nietzsche
Ethereum as a project is more than just a technology, even if the technology is at its core. In the rush to create, co-create and debug everything, you sometimes lose sight of the big picture. You need to stop for a second, step back, and observe in order to fully appreciate what is going on.
The project started as an idea in Vitalik’s mind. Ethereum has now spread to thousands and thousands of other minds around the world, thanks to this interconnected digital mesh called the Internet. A sea of minds gathered around the idea of a full general purpose blockchain is creating, as you read these lines, the minecraft of blockchain technology.
In all this excitement, we’ve also had to think about how we can better ensure that vision doesn’t get corrupted, while also delivering the technology itself. This post is the first in a series that attempts to explain both the spirit and motivation behind the project as a whole.
soul searching: profit or non-profit?
From the beginning, our intent was to deliver technology aligned with the wider community and to foster a meritocratic culture based on trust, openness, and respect, not just for our ethereal peers but for everyone, united by a pure passion for change. positive world.
In recent months, the model of our organization and the very nature of this project have been in discussion, both among ourselves and between us and the community. These were healthy discussions, and I’d like to personally thank everyone who cared enough to share their thoughts on our forums, in a blog comment, or in a reddit post.
It has been an intense and interesting journey. Along the way he made us reflect on our values as we looked at each other and wondered what this project really means to each and every one of us. During these long sessions of soul-searching we realized that most dichotomies boiled down to a single question: for profit or not?
After researching a number of models and organizations, we came to the conclusion that, in order to keep the protocol and software as pure as possible, the only real option was to create a non-profit structure with the stated mission of developing, maintaining, and nurture and explore the potential of this new technology. Motivated not by money but by a radiant passion for this crazy idea of a free, open and decentralized world. That is what ultimately makes us happy and most importantly what makes us get up and work on this project, proudly saying that today we are building tomorrow.
Details about the chosen nonprofit structure will be posted on a series of blogs. However, this blog post is not about the details, but rather the big picture and why we’re doing it first.
continuing the experiment
We all come from different backgrounds and life experiences, but in the end we are all connected through this meaningful project that allows us to explore our passions and ideas through code, art, hardware, or sometimes something entirely new.
By design, this project is breaking new ground in a way that hasn’t been tried before. This, by definition, is a trial and error experiment, looking to continue the experiment started by Bitcoin, on multiple levels. Since this has never been attempted before, there are no right or wrong answers or concrete experiences to draw on. We are entering uncharted territories.
Even if we don’t understand all the applications and implications yet, the sheer number of ideas and initiatives sparked by the central idea itself is encouraging and gives us a glimpse into the limitless potential of our minds: we are designing and co-creating our own “reality” future.
I like to see the ethereum project as a blank canvas, where anyone can create digital masterpieces. The technology behind it serves as a catalyst, allowing people to develop their innate playful creativity. If the network and the blockchain were the canvas, the paints and colors would be the lines of code that run transparently and uncensored on top. Everyone is invited to co-create.
The genesis sale represents the next step in this epic journey ahead, and a way to jumpstart the ethereum ecosystem. The collective intelligence of the swarm will then have its collective fingers in an amazing open technology, capable of unleashing waves of innovation across the web and etherweb. With technology like this available, the centralized and corrupt monopolies that extract the blood and tears of humanity face rapid obsolescence.
portal to greatness
“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive and then do that. Because what the world needs is people come alive.” howard thurman
Most of us are aware that the current planetary operating system is pushing us to extinction as a species. Finance seems to be the current paradigm that humanity has to transcend on its way from a zero type civilization in a type one civilization.
When a technology like ethereum exists, I feel like we almost owe it to ourselves and our species to explore its potential in finding solutions. We truly have the power at our fingertips to create the future we want through code and purposeful action: if you see something you don’t like, contribute something you like. We think it’s important, especially at this critical time, to follow our hearts rather than mindless extrinsic rewards. This is how, perhaps, we can open a portal to our full potential, both individually and collectively.
I suspect that Sir Timothy Berners-Lee most likely couldn’t imagine something like Bitcoin running on top of his unified hypertext network protocol in the early 1990s. Just as we can’t fully understand the implications of the cryptographic renaissance at this point in time. course traversing the ubiquitous digital mesh that connects over 2 billion minds.
How far can we take it?
What is the limit?
Is there really a limit in the first place?
From our humble beginnings as gatherers and hunters, we have reached a point where we can contemplate the nature of the infinite. Capable of grasping the idea that we are made of trillions of atoms vibrating in unison in a pale blue dot, all while permanently connected via a digital planetary consciousness network. We are learning to dream with an open mind, just as we do with our eyes closed. We are about to change the world with our minds through lines of code that dance with atoms on the edge of the singularity. The interesting part is about to begin.
How many rivers will we have to cross before we find our way?
