The open source of the STARK Prover technology will lead to more developer participation and community collaborations to build dApps on the platform.
Blockchain Scaling Systems StarkWare, which reached a valuation of $8 billion last year, plans to open up its Ethereum scaling system and core cryptographic software tool. The announcement came during the two-day StarkWare Sessions 2023 event in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Israel-based StarkWare is behind technology that addresses Ethereum’s scalability issues, such as slow performance or high gas fees. The company currently has two platforms, the first being the StarkEx scaling engine. The other is StarkNet, which puts technology in the hands of developers building decentralized applications (DApps).
According to the latest development, StarkWare plans to open the STARK Prover technology that powers these two platforms. StarkNet is the widely adopted Layer 2 scaling solution for Ethereum based on ZK-STARKs technology. Similarly, the tester is concerned with generating cryptographic proofs to compress transactions and improve overall scalability. Speaking about the development, StarkWare Co-Founder and Chairman Eli Ben-Sasson saying:
“Every step we take to provide infrastructure and make it accessible and decentralized is a catalyst for developers to build. And the faster and more widely they are built, the faster we will see mass adoption of solutions that actually allow people to manage their own funds. So there is a direct line between open source key technology and the popularization of self-custody. This marks a significant step in scaling Ethereum and crypto as STARK technology becomes a publicly available resource.”
StarkNet Prover Benefits
As StarkNet Prover technology becomes open source, it will allow more people to review the code. Ultimately, this will help catch errors and increase transparency. The StarkWare team said that this move seems like a positive step towards further decentralization of StarkNet.
StarkWare launched the StarkNet solution in November 2021 on the Ethereum mainnet. Since then, the StarkWare team has gradually opened up elements of the StarkNet stack, including the StarkNet sequencer, the Papyrus client software, and the Cairo 1.0 programming language. this latest decision marks the completion of open source for the entire StarkNet software stack.
This step will also drive the accessibility of StarkWare for developers and further collaboration within the community. “We think of the Prover as the magic wand of STARK technology,” said Ben-Sasson. “But of course, it’s not really magic, it’s robust cryptography and today we’re saying everyone who wants to should make it their own. They need to know exactly how it works, tweak the code, edit the code, and distribute it further.”
