Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of ethereum, has published a roadmap detailing the network's upgrades and activities for 2024.
In a series of tweetsButerin stated that the 2024 roadmap contained few changes from the 2023 plan and that the network will focus on Merge, Surge, Scourge, Verge, Purge and Splurge.
ethereum's roadmap to 2024
Since the merger took place in September 2022, the ethereum network will now prioritize the implementation of the Single Slot Finality Function (SSF). While the merger saw ethereum move from a proof-of-work (PoW) to a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, SSF will address the network's current weaknesses.
He ethereum.org/fil/roadmap/single-slot-finality/” data-wpel-link=”external” target=”_blank”>concept of SSF can make ethereum's consensus mechanism validate blocks more efficiently; blocks could be proposed and finalized in the same space, significantly reducing time to completion by 15 minutes. Buterin believes this is the easiest path to fixing ethereum's PoS issues.
Next comes the Surge with a goal of 100,000 transactions per second in buildups. The ethereum co-founder revealed that cross-accumulation standards and interoperability have been highlighted as areas for long-term improvements, and 2024 will see significant progress in expanding the accumulation in both EIP-4844 and the rollups themselves .
ethereum is also looking to solve its centralization problems through Scourge. According to the roadmap, the focus will be on mitigating such concerns in the network's PoS design, especially around maximum extractable value (MEV) and liquid staking or pooling. Buterin previously recommended reducing the cost of running nodes to solve the challenge.
Facilitate block verifications
Additionally, the roadmap mentioned Verge, which could make block verification easier. Verkle trees are almost ready for inclusion, and soon block verification will just involve downloading a few bytes of data, performing some basic calculations, and verifying a succinct, non-interactive knowledge (SNARK) argument.
The network would explore the verification precompile of the ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) to arrive at a fully SNARK ethereum.
Additionally, Purge will simplify the protocol, eliminate technical debt, and limit network participation costs, while Splurge will fix everything else.
“Removed 'Increase L1 Gas Limit' to emphasize that the limit can be increased *at any time*; There is no need to wait for the SNARKs to be complete, especially for small increments. 'Status expiration' has been reduced, to reflect a general consensus that it is a low priority and urgent item, especially considering stateless clients and execution/PBS tickets,” Buterin explained.
