I am Gavin Wood, co-founder of Ethereum and, along with Vitalik Buterin and Jeffrey Wilcke, one of the three directors of Eth Dev, the NFP organization that manages the development (under contract from Ethereum Suisse) of Ethereum. block chain. This is a small update to let everyone know what’s been going on recently.
I’m sitting here on an immaculate couch that has been stepped back in time from the 1960s. It’s in the room that will become the R&R room at the heart of Ethereum’s (C++) development operation. Surrounding me is Alex Leverington in the armchair of a Bond villain, and Aeron Buchanan trapped behind a locker that looks like an original prop from MIX. Lighting equipment of a Soviet. Bounty hunterNow forgotten except in Berlin’s coolest districts, where Renaissance chemistry and ’60s luxury bring Frankenstein to life, it provides an unflinching glow to the work-in-progress. There’s still a lot to do here (I feel a bit like I’m on the set of Anneka Challenge) but it is undeniable that it is taking shape. This is largely due to our very own Anneka Rice, Sarah O’Neill, who is working around the clock to get this venue ready for ÐΞVcon-0, our first developer symposium. Assisting her, equally throughout the day, is the inimitable Roland, a hardened international interior designer whose memoirs I can’t wait to read.
On a personal note, I have to say that these past few months have been some of the busiest of my life. I have spent the last two weeks between Switzerland and the UK, visiting Stephan, Ian and Louis. Despite the attractions of the north of England, it’s nice to be back in Berlin; the combination of great burgers and cocktails, beautiful surroundings, and great people makes it hard to leave. Awesome C++ programmers are welcome to take that as a hint: we’re still hiring (-:
technicians
Over the past few weeks, we’ve made a number of major revisions to the protocol, mostly provisions for creating thin client ÐApp nodes. In due course, there will be a directors post detailing these, but suffice to say that we are more committed than ever to the Ethereum blockchain making massively multi-tenant decentralized applications possible for all sizes of devices. The seventh in our proof-of-concept series is awaiting imminent release and the latest in the series, PoC-8, will begin development shortly.
Fresh meat
As time goes by, our team gets stronger. I am pleased to announce that Dr. Sven Ehlert has joined us. He will be in charge of development operations; cleaning up the build process, making the build as robust as possible, assisting Caktux in our CI systems, and most importantly helping design a stress test harness in which we will simulate a number of extreme situations , measuring and analyzing. He is also a scrum aficionado and will help us streamline some of our development processes as our team grows.
It is also my great pleasure to announce that Dr. Jutta Steiner will also be working closely with us in the ability to manage our security audit. In addition to being a keen application developer, she has an excellent track record managing projects and an excellent understanding of not only this cutting-edge technology, but also the human processes behind it.
I must also thank Dr. Andreas Lubbe; Although we are long-time members of the Berlin Ethereum community and have worked on Ethereum-related code (a notable node.js devotee), we recently started working much more closely on the secure contract documentation framework of Ethereum (SECDoc) and the associated natural language specification format, NatSpec. I look forward to a great collaboration.
In addition to Lefteris, who started his first official day with us today (working with Christian on Solidity, and more specifically on the SECDoc and NatSpec parts), we have two new developers joining us: Yann Levreau and Arkadiy Paronyan. Yann, recently arrived in Berlin from his native France, will join Arkadiy, who will travel from Moscow to join the team. They both have substantial experience in C++ and related technologies and will help us develop the developer tools and, in particular, pave the way towards the IDE vision.
Finally, I am happy to report that Christoph Jentzsch, although he originally joined us for just 2 months (while taking a break from his PhD studies), will be joining the project full time in the new year and continuing his much appreciated work. in our testing and the overall health and robustness of C++.
ÐΞVcon-0
As time goes by, Sarah, Roland and their team are rushing even faster to finish our hub. Because they know that next Monday the 24th Berlin will have some news. Developers and contributors from all over the world will come to 37a Waldemarstraße, Berlin 10999 for one week to get everyone on the same page. It’s DEVcon-0: The First Ethereum Developer Symposium.
Conceived by Jeff and I on a sleepy train from Zug to Zurich as a means of getting the Amsterdam/Go guys on the same page as the Berlin/C++ guys, it has become a showcase, a set of seminars and workshops. from all of ÐΞV, our technologies, our staff and some of our closest collaborators. It is an opportunity for each of us to build lasting professional relationships and come together in what will become a project that may, if not define, form a hallmark in our professional lives.
Our hub will house about 40 people, the vast majority of whom are accomplished technical minds that Jeff, Vitalik, or I have mentioned at one point or another, and over the period of a week we’ll be chatting, mingling, and sharing our ideas. , hopes and dreams for all things blockchain, decentralized and disruptive. It’s going to be amazing – stay tuned for the videos!
getting closer
In addition to the ongoing work to kick off PoC-8 and the alpha series, I am happy to report that the Solidity project is moving forward under Christian’s direction: the first Solidity build contracts have been delivered and tested working on the testnet, and as I write this, I see another pull request for state mappings. Good thing.
Alex has also been working tirelessly on our cryptographic code and is now starting to work on the p2p layer, the full strategy of which we will see in his direction at ÐΞVcon. Marek and Marian have also been busy with the Javascript API, and I can assure developers of Javascript applications that they will have a lot to look forward to in PoC-8.
summarizing
There are also some other developments and staff that I’d love to announce, but I’m afraid that once again will have to wait until next time. Watch this space for a post-ÐΞVcon update!
It gave.
