ethereum has launched the “short-lived” Mekong testnet to test key updates to the upcoming Pectra fork.
The ethereum ecosystem is taking a step closer to forking Pectra with the launch of the Mekong testnet, a short-lived environment designed to test key upgrades before the mainnet upgrade.
The testnet integrates a variety of ethereum improvement proposals, including user experience adjustments, staking modifications, and changes to deposit and exit mechanisms, the ethereum Foundation explained in a Nov. 7 statement. ethereum.org/2024/11/07/introducing-mekong-testnet” target=”_blank” rel=”nofollow”>blog post.
“We may see some minor spec changes or smaller EIPs, but the features included here will make their way to existing public testnets and eventually the ethereum mainnet.”

According to the blog announcement, the testnet, which will run for a limited time, includes all major updates scheduled for inclusion in Pectra. However, it is unclear how long the testnet will be active. While minor tweaks may still occur, major changes will come to ethereum's public testnets and eventually the mainnet, the foundation says.
Those interested in participating in the testnet can access the Mekong Network through its homepage, where they can connect their wallets, explore block data, and request test funds. Instructions for running a node on the testnet are also available, and participants must operate an Execution and Consensus layer node, as they would on the ethereum mainnet.
The foundation also noted that the Mekong testnet will not affect other ethereum networks, such as Holesky or Sepolia, but the insights gained from the tests will inform the broader implementation of Pectra. The update is supposed to be available in the first quarter of 2025.
