ethereum researcher Justin Drake revealed a plan to revamp the blockchain's consensus mechanism through an upgrade called “Beam Chain” by 2027. x.com/jspediacci/status/1856312898911645725″ rel=”noopener nofollow noreferrer”>announced during his presentation at the ethereum Devcon conference in Bangkok.
The proposal seeks to modernize the ethereum consensus layer while maintaining the existing data and execution layers. “This is just a proposal,” Drake said, emphasizing that its implementation would require broad community support.
He confirmed that no new token would be created.
The update introduces several technical improvements, including SNARK for chain verification, post-quantum secure cryptography, and a possible reduction of staking requirements from 32 eth to 1 eth.
The plan also aims to improve processing speed and improve management of the Maximum Extractable Value (MEV).
The implementation schedule outlines specification development in 2025, customer implementation in 2026, and comprehensive testing in 2027.
Two development teams have committed to creating Beam Chain clients: the ZIM team from India using the Zig programming language and Lambda Class from South America.
Drake noted that recent advances in SNARK technology and zero-knowledge virtual machines (ZK-VMs) make the upgrade feasible.
Validators could choose their preferred ZKVM implementation and verification would be done off-chain.
The proposal leverages existing infrastructure and expertise, including current networking libraries, serialization tools, and the expertise of established consensus client teams. This technical review follows ethereum's transition to proof-of-stake consensus in 2022.
