We hope everyone is excited for the upcoming end of the year holidays. Today, we have some exciting new changes to announce for the Ethereum.org translation program and some milestones to celebrate.
For starters, we can’t thank you enough for all your support this year. Thanks to you we have been able to update 16 languages in 2020!
And since our launch 13 months ago, unique pageviews of translated content have grown 10 times more than last year. 🎉
But we don’t want to stop there…
Help us with v2.0+
Today we are announcing our next big push of content that is ready to be translated. It’s a lot of content, so it’s on Crowdin in v2.0, v2.1 and v2.2. These versions cover the following pages:
- Eth2 – Important information covering everything from Eth2, from Beacon Chain and staking, to why we need Eth2 updates and how they will change the network.
- Ethereum Developer Resources – a wide spectrum of educational content for both beginners and advanced developers.
- and more!
Start translating v2.0 on Crowdin now!
let’s globalize
Currently, the ethereum.org website supports 33 languages, but 25 languages are still in progress on Crowdin. We’re seeing more demand from smaller language communities, so we’ve added more regional languages to Crowdin.
Our goal is to make ethereum.org more accessible to users around the world, regardless of language and location. We are getting closer and closer and we believe that with your help (and working as a community) we will achieve our goal.
A new user experience for ethereum.org translations
Despite the growth in traffic for translated pages, we have noticed that growth relative to overall traffic has slowed this year. As seen below, pageviews for translated pages reached almost 20% of total unique pageviews in February, but have decreased to 10% in recent months.
We believe this is because we have expanded our English content. much in recent months that translated content has become obsolete. As a result, more users are returning to the English website.
With this data in mind, along with a desire to make our latest content accessible to sites in all languages, we’re making more changes…
Language site updates
We are concerned that users of the site in other languages are missing out on the latest information, which is only available in English. So we are making the following changes:
- If a page is not available in the chosen language, we will display the content in English along with the banner below (which will be translated into the chosen language). This means you’ll always see the most up-to-date content, even if we haven’t been able to translate it yet.
- If there have been updates in English to a page that you are viewing in your chosen language, we will offer you the opportunity to view the new content in English. That way, you will know that there is new information that has not yet been translated.
Our content changes are often more than just copy changes. We update the site regularly to add more up-to-date products, articles, and other resources that we don’t want you to miss out on.
We hope this approach provides a better user experience. ethereum.organd that it could encourage more translation contributions.
Translation program updates
- Hide old versions in CrowdIn
To focus on the latest translation of the website, we hide the old versions (v.1.0 and v.1.1) in CrowdIn. The contents previously translated in old versions are saved in the Translation Memory of our project. This will be used to speed up the translation of new versions by pre-translating the same or similar strings.
- New version update: v.2.x
As mentioned, in order to translate all the new content, we’ve split things up into a few minor versions: v.2.0, v.2.1, and v2.2. We have given those numbers in order of priority. We encourage you to translate the lowest version first and then move to the higher versions. If you want to translate higher versions, that’s fine too, but we’ll upload them later, after the lower versions are uploaded.
Call for more translators
For many of us, 2020 was a challenging year. We deeply appreciate the community’s tireless enthusiasm and continued contributions during this difficult time. We look forward to continuing our great work with you and welcoming more volunteers next year. We are always looking for more translators to help us engage more people. If you know someone who might be interested, feel free to direct them to the translation programor to our Discord.
And remember that you can always post questions, collaborate with other translators or just hang out on our discord server ethereum.org. Search the #translations channel for specific translation inquiries.
We wish you and your loved ones a safe and peaceful end of the year.🌟🎄
