Ethereum Foundation Confirms Date for Shapella Update

In a recent post, ETH lead developer Tim Beiko revealed that after months of testing and a short-lived dev network release, the Shapella network upgrade will go live on the Sepolia network at epoch 56832, scheduled for the 28th of February.

shapella essentially it means to two Ethereum upgrades: “Shanghai” and “Capella”. The update will allow Ethereum withdrawals at the execution layer and update the consensus layer of the Beacon chain simultaneously.

• New functionality will also be introduced in both the execution and consensus layers. Changes to the execution layer include:

1. EIP-3651: Warm COINBASE
2. EIP-3855: PUSH0 instruction
3. EIP-3860: Meter Start Code and Limit
4. EIP-4895: Beacon chain push withdrawals as operations
5. EIP-6049: Obsolete SELFDESTRUCT

• On the other hand, the changes to the consensus layer for the Capella update include full and partial retirements for validators. The original singular historical roots will be replaced by an independent state and historical accumulator blocks.
• Ethereum users or ETH holders do not have to upgrade unless informed to take further action.
• Non-participating node operators, on the other hand, will have to upgrade their nodes to Ethereum client versions for the Sepolia upgrade. The same goes for gamblers.
• If a participant or node operator does not update to the latest version, their client will be synchronized with the pre-fork blockchain after the update. As a result, they will be locked into an incompatible chain following the above rules and will not be able to send ETH tokens or operate on the post-Shapella Sepolia network.
• The latest development comes a week after concerns were raised about a possible delay in the Shanghai update due to a vulnerability detected in the Shapella public testnet.
• However, the developers affirmed that the problem can be fixed with a patch.
