ethereum developers have relaunched the Holesky testnet after its initial launch on September 15 failed due to major network configuration errors.
Holesky’s dashboard data showed consistent block production that included customer activity from entities such as Google Cloud, Lighthouse, and Teku.
Holesky, the largest testnet launched on ethereum since the merger, was successfully launched on September 28.
At the time of this publication, the testnet worked without problems and was not stopped by problems reported by the developers after the first attempt.
Additionally, sentiment from a YouTube livestream hosted by a developer known as EthStaker suggested that ethereum developers are pleased with the release of Holesky. “We won’t have to build a third one,” one developer said on the call.
Holesky is positioned as a key component of ethereum testnet ecosystems, where builders simulate major upgrades such as proto-danksharding to reduce transaction costs and run tests for decentralized applications (dapps).
In addition to addressing the limited supply of ethereum (eth) tests on Goerli, a major ethereum testnet, the developers created Holesky to bring double the number of validators onto the ethereum mainnet.
ethereum surpassed 500,000 validators in January 2023, more than three months after The Merge in September 2022, while Holesky currently has 1.4 million active validators on the network.
Additionally, Holesky’s genesis test eth supply is set at 1.6 billion to adequately fuel developer activity on the testnet.
Holesky arrived just over two weeks after The Merge’s September 15 anniversary. The Merge, considered ethereum‘s most significant technical update to date, refers to the move from proof-of-work (PoW) to proof-of-stake (PoS). ).
ethereum PoS introduced several changes, including reducing eth emissions to achieve a deflationary supply and validators to replace miners in the old PoW model.
Interestingly, The Merge is one of the six milestones listed on the ethereum roadmap. Other major updates include The Surge, The Scourge, The Verge, The Purge, and finally The Splurge.
The developers also hope to address community concerns, such as uncontrolled gambling, with updates like in Dencun.
