Last year, after a three-year hiatus, we came out of the pandemic stronger than before and meeting in Bogota for the biggest and some would do say“better Devcon yet.” Since then, we were frequently asked “wen Devcon 7?” Well today, we have some news! 😃 🎉
🥁 When is Devcon 7? 🥁
We couldn’t be more excited to announce that Devcon 7 is coming to Southeast Asia in 2024! 🎊
Before you ask if we got our years right, we’ll let you know why we’re scheduling Devcon 7 for 2024. We thought long and hard about this. This is why:
1) More Impact 🌏
One of the most powerful things about Devcon VI in Bogotá was the participation of the burgeoning Latin American Ethereum community. Given the three years, we had plenty of time to engage with local communities, support and empower them, and make the biggest impact possible in a regional Ethereum community.
We aim to create the same impact at Road to Devcon 7 in Southeast Asia, giving more time for the burgeoning Ethereum community to mature and develop further. We hope to see the development of new base communities. 🌱
2) Greater significance 💥
Devcon VI in Bogota set the bar high with the amount of community support, the quality of the content and updates, and the production itself. Scheduling Devcon 7 for 2024 buys us time and allows us to maintain the level by:
- The projects and the protocol will have time to progress and improve, so the speakers will have something really meaningful to share.
- With more time for production and ideation, we can make it a world-class event again.
- A slower pace can make the event more accessible for those who want to participate but don’t want to (or can’t) travel to Devcon every year.
- The longer the wait, the greater the anticipation! 😁
3) Embracing the subtraction 🤲
There are more Ethereum events and communities this year than ever before around the world. As mentioned by Aya in his talk about the Ethereum Foundation Subtraction mentality, we want to subtract so that you You can add. This is also true with Ethereum community events, and we want to give space for local community events to grow even more. After all, the Ethereum ecosystem is stronger with more diverse participants.
There are going to be lots of amazing community driven events this year that you can attend, speak to or sponsor instead of Devcon. In conclusion, we are confident that scheduling Devcon 7 for 2024 will be beneficial due to the greater total impact it will have on each attendee and the community at large.
Southeast Asia and Ethereum 🌏
As our main event, Devcon focuses on bringing everyone together, building bridges with external communities, sharing important messages and updates, and welcoming newcomers to Ethereum.
Ethereum is global, and bringing Devcon to Southeast Asia is in line with our goal of reaching out to more local Ethereum communities, as well as increasing diversity within the broader Ethereum community. The Ethereum community is still dominated by the West in many ways, even though the crypto is most practically used in Southeast Asia. To illustrate that, four countries within Southeast Asia rank in the top 20 of the Global Cryptocurrency Adoption Indexwith Vietnam and the Philippines at #1 and #2.
Southeast Asia has enormous untapped and continually growing opportunities, similar to what we saw in South America.
Therefore, Devcon 7 in Southeast Asia offers an opportunity to provide a platform on the world Ethereum stage to a large, new, active and diverse community.
👉 By the way, we are still evaluating specific locations within Southeast Asia, and the final decision will be based on a number of factors, some of which are as simple as venue availability. Some communities in Southeast Asia have already submitted excellent proposals (still under consideration!), and we are reopening the forum to give some extra time to other Southeast Asian communities to propose their cities!
The deadline for receiving suggestions is March 15, 2023!
We are looking forward to exploring the diverse cultures of Southeast Asia and the different places in this region, from the bustling streets of Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur to the beautiful beaches of Bali and Phuket, the majestic mountains of Vietnam and more.
Lastly, we want to thank everyone who submitted proposals for the Devcon 7 location on the forum. They were very helpful, it was not an easy decision, and the suggestions will be useful for years to come, not only for Devcon but for many Ethereum community events.
