In a collaboration that merges the worlds of art and bitcoin, Marco Santini, an acclaimed impact artist, recently lent his creativity to bitcoin Magazine and The bitcoin Conference. His involvement began with the creation of a piece with the first issue of bitcoin Magazine, Enlightened: bitcoin Magazine, Issue 1 (see bitcoin/illuminated-bitcoin-magazine-issue-1″>here), which Emily Bailey purchased at a Sotheby's auction and now proudly resides at the bitcoin Museum in Nashville, Tennessee. This iconic piece features key elements that summarise crucial moments in bitcoin's history according to the magazine itself.
At the bitcoin 2024 Conference, Santini took his commitment a step further by creating a live mural and collaborative activation. This vibrant piece, now also on display at the bitcoin Museum, aims to encapsulate the diverse voices of attendees who answered the profound question, “What does bitcoin mean to you?” One notable response came from btc Inc CEO David Bailey, who mused: “You know, so many things, cheesy clichés like ‘hope,’ but I’m going to say ‘prosperity. ’ Because bitcoin, beyond hope, you need all the things that bitcoin brings to your life… fulfillment beyond the financial element. If you’re full of hope, potential, and (you’re) excited about the future, you’re going to thrive.”
Tony Sakich had the opportunity to interview Santini and go into more depth about his experience at the conference and the essence of his mural:
—
Tony: Okay, so you've been doing this all day? What's your response to everyone who's been telling you things and coming up to you asking you to write words? What's been your experience at the conference?
Frame: Of course. My name is Marco Santini. I'm an impact artist. I travel all over the world and I like to say that I reflect the spirit of communities through interactive collaborative art. This weekend, here at the bitcoin Conference, I asked people: “What does bitcoin mean to you?” Without judgment, without fear, listening to everyone, all different walks of life, and really trying to understand what they think.
I got over 250 unique responses which I captured here on this mural. It really has bright colors and positive messages. I think surrounding yourself with bright colors and lots of messages can help your mental health and make you feel better and generally connect with your community.
Tony: What were some interesting takeaways from the responses you received?
Frame: Specifically, there are some interesting takeaways. The most common answer by far was “freedom.” Many people talked about being able to own their own money, not having a middleman, perhaps fear or distrust of the banking system. The second most important idea was that of community, that people feel part of a family, that their friends are here. They interact with each other in some way and look forward to seeing each other in person. It was very interesting to hear how people connect, find friends, and meet people here. Even though they wear the bitcoin logo from head to toe, when I asked them “What does bitcoin mean?” they stopped to think about it carefully, which often led to deep and meaningful conversations.
Tony: That sounds great. Can I add anything else?
Frame: What is his word?
Tony: P2P, peer-to-peer. Because bitcoin is for the people and it's a way for anyone to transact whenever they want freely. They don't need anyone's permission to send anything. It's about community and trusting the person you're doing business with.
